The Detroit Bank
Really

The annual statement of the
Dominion Life Assurance Corn-
, pany released recently, reflects a
: definitely favorable improvement
in general business conditions. The
report, covering the Company's
operations for its 47th year, re-
veals an increase in assets of over
1 ;2,200,00, which makes a total
in excess of $31,098,000 as of
Dec. 31.
Ford S. Kampf, president and
, managing director, in citing in-
dications of improved business
conditions as revealed in the state-
ment, pointed out that the de-
, mand for policy loans decreased
appreciably during 1935 and that
business in force at the end of
the year was $155,279,029, an in-
' crease of over five millions of
dollars.
Assurance issued and revived
during the year amounted to
$23,180,974, while payments to
the company's policyholders and
beneficiaries amounted to more
than $2,988,000. Policy and an-
nuity reserves were increased
during the past 12 months by over
a million and a half dollars, bring-
ing the total up to $25,650,827.
This amount is well in excess of
the government requirement for
the protection of the Company's
63,000 policies.
1 The statement shows an excess
of receipts over disbursements of
$2,359,028 at the end of the year,
while the company's income
showed a year-end total of
$6,896,087.
Indicating the general improve-
ment of business conditions in
Detroit, the 'company's branch,
Moe Leiter and Associates, 2722-
26 Union Guardian Bldg., Cadillac
0603, has terminated a highly suc-
cessful year, showing decided
progress, the Detroit organization
had one of the best records in
the entire company.

Chamisho Osor b'Shvat Is an
Occasion for Celebration
by Hebrew Students

Chamisho Osor b'Shvat, which
takes place Sunday, Feb. 8, will
be celebrated by the United He-
brew Schools in the traditional
manner: By contributing a cer-
tain amount of money to the Na-
tional Fund for the purchase of
trees in Palestine, and by arrang-
ing parties at which Palestinian
fruit will be nerved as refresh-
ments.
Chamisho Osor b'Shvat is
known as the Rosh Ilashonah of
the trees. There is a beautiful
custom which is related in the
Talmud. Whenever a boy seas
born, a cedar tree was planted;
when a girl was born a cypress
tree was planted. When the chil-
dren grew up and were given in
marriage, the branches of the
trees furnished the poles for the
wedding canopy, Chuppall. This
is how the land of Israel was
plentiful of trees and became fa-
mous for its beautiful orchards
and fine forests.
In our own days, as soon as the
Chalutzim commenced to rebuild
the Jewish Homeland, they im-
mediately decided that if Pales-
tine was to be rebuilt, it must
again become the land of the trees
and tree planting became a very
important duty. The Jewish Na-
tional Fund, which is the land
buying agency in Palestine for
the Jewish people, is responsible
for the beautiful forests which
have been planted of late iu Pal-
estine, such as Ilerzl Forest,
Balfour Forest, Washington For-
est, etc.

to Paul Horowitz from Dr. Jack-
man advising the inspection of
the gymnasium. The speakers

Promising results are already
evident for this year's Gewerk-
