Fascism in Hungary
While Hungarian Jewry was celebrat-
ing last month the 40th anniversary of se-
curing political emancipation, the influen-
tial conservative anti-Semitic daily Uj
Magyarsag commenced a movement to
IIitlerize Hungary and demanded a Fas-
cist regime. The newspaper's director,
Dr. Stephen Milotay, launched an attack
on "Jewish big business" and the "Jew-
ish capitalist press" and he stressed his
sympathy with the Nazis by declaring that
"introduction of a Fascist or Hitlerite re-
gime would strengthen not only the posi-
tion of Hungary but also that of the Hun-
garian minorities in the states of the Little
Entente."
Now comes the additional disturbing
news from Hungary indicating the extent
of anti-Semitism in that country. The
Goemboes government has withdrawn all
postal rights from the Pariser Tageblatt,
the leading anti-Nazi newspaper published
in Paris under the editorship of Georg
Bernhard, the famous former editor of
the Vossische Zeitung, thus making it
impossible for the paper to circulate in
Hungary. From Budapest also comes the
information that Hungary's friendship for
Germany has led her to apply the Nurem-
berg anti-Semitic laws to Hungarian Jews
who wish to marry Germans, the Hungar-
ian ministry of justice having refused per-
mission to a Hungarian Jew to marry a
German girl. The explanation was given
that because of the existing reciprocal
agreements between Hungary and Ger-
many, the former recognizes these laws.
This is how the menace of Nazi anti-
Semitism is spreading outside the borders
of Germany. Even in friendly Czechoslo-
vakia citizenship was denied to Heinrich
Mann, eminent novelist, as a result of the
influence of the Heinlein Sudeten Ger-
man Party in Reichenberg where Mann's
application for citizenship was filed.
The anti-Fascist forces are thus pre-
rented with ever increasing obstacles on
every front. But the battle must go on in
defense of democratic government.
The Late Solomon Lamport
The death of Solomon Lamport re-
moves from the American Jewish scene
one of the most cultured, most idealistic
and most charming personalities.
His great contributions to Palestine,
especially through the Jewish National
Fund of America whom he served loyally
as treasurer for many years, are land-
marks in Palestinian reconstruction work.
Similarly commendable were his efforts in
behalf of cultural projects and in the in-
terest of the revival and advancement of
Hebrew.
Services of the type rendered his peo-
ple by Solomon Lamport helped to make
his family name a blessing in this country.
He not only observed and honored Jew-
ish traditions but labored all his life to
help to perpetuate them. Especially in
the cause of Jewish education he was a
champion without equal. When men of
his type are called by death, all Israel
must sit in mourning.
The Late Elwood Mead
Elwood Mead, chief of the United
States reclamation commission, was more
than a friend. He was an expert on agri-
cultural matter who frequently advised
Zionist leaders on the most effective ways
of utilizing opportunities in Palestine to
best advantage. His report, in behalf of
a commission of experts who went to Pal-
estine in 1922, is an important document in
Zionist annals and gave valuable advice
on policies to be pursued in the develop-
ment of the Jewish National Home. His
death serves to revive interest in that re-
port and to remind us of the great friend-
ship we enjoyed in this eminent Christian.
This is the tree-planting season in Pal-
estine. There is not a more fitting way
of observing Chamisho Osor b'Shvat—the

tional Fund.

I have about come to the con-
clusion that good international re-
lations cannot exist in a world that
is half slave, half free. I don't see
how there can be satisfactory re-
lations between peoples which hold
different fundamental conceptions
about everything of importance,
and which use words and symbols
in such a different sense that in-
ter-communication becomes almost
impossible.
On one side we see a constella-
tion of nations which believe that
human beings have individual
minds, wills and aspirations, and
that this is the fact which differ-
entiates them from other animals;
that they have in themselves capa-
cities for improvement, even if
very slowly; and that they should
be allowed to exercise their minds,
and state their aspirations, and
manage their own affairs, as a
means of learning how to do all
these things better.
On the other hand we see nations
which have never accepted that
connection of human progress, or
which have abandoned it because
it is aggravatingly slow and un-
dramatic. Those nations are now
so distant from us that they seem
on different planets. Those planets
revolve around different suns from
the one we know. Each of these
suns is a man—only • man—sub-
ject to the weakness, bodily and
mental and normal, of other men.
But he is set up on high in a posi-
tion where his aberrations affect
the comfort and the security and
even the lives of millions of other
men and women. Those subject
people are not able to influence
his views, or tell him their views,
or protect themselves from his pos-
sible folly. Once they have accepted
him, they are caught. They lie still
and do his bidding. Or else they
conspire, at the risk of their lives,
in the dark, cut off from most of
their fellow citizens who hold simi-
lar views, and isolated from like-
minded men in other nations. Or
perhaps they protest individually,
and are jailed or escape abroad.
Their "Art" is Propaganda
As I have said, communication
between us and those planets
hardly exists. We have certain con-
ceptions of civilization. We have
terms for describing those concep-
tions. We have instruments for
giving them effect, and means for
changing those instruments if that
seems desirable. We know more or
less what we mean when we talk
to each other about art, law, sport,
religion, philosophy or science.
We can talk to each other wheth-
er we are Christians or atheists,
whether we like African sculpture
or Gainsborough or Dali, whether
we believe arthritis can be cured
or not, whether or not we believe
in mental telepathy, whether we
like skiing or cross-word puzzles,
whether or not we believe in the
recall of judges or a federal edu-
cational system or labor injunc-
tions.
We can do this because we have
words which we all understand,
words with meanings which we all
accept. But how are we to talk to
people who say familiar words but
mean something else?
How are we to discuss art with
people who say "art" and mean
"propaganda?" How are we to
compete with people to whom sport
is propaganda? One of the clearest
avowals of the dictator's conception
of sport was printed in the Herald
Tribune, quoting as follows the
head of the Reich Diet, Dr. Kurt
Muensch: "The non-political, so-
called neutral athlete, is unthink-
able." "Those who are politically
blind," he aded, "cannot be allowed
to be victors," because "Victors
must be pioneers in political in-
fluence." Which is to say that the
word "sport" does not mean a
game. or even • competition, but
the business of conditioning young
men for service to the state, with
war not just a dire possibility but
something ennobling and desirable
