Two Jews Named to
New French Cabinet
PARIS (WNS) — Two Jews
and one half-Jew were included
in the new cabinet formed by
Albert Sarraut after the resig-
nation of Premier Pierre Laval.
The Jewish members of the
cabinet are Georges Mandel,
minister of communications,
and Jacques Stern, minister of
colonies. The half-Jew in the
cabinet is Oscar Frossard,
whose mother was a Jewess.
Mandel has been a member of
every French cabinet since No-
vember, 1934, when he return-
ed to the limelight as minis-
ter of communications in the
Flandin cabinet. A leader of
the right wing and former con-
fidante of Georges Clemenceau,
Mandel has fequently been
mentioned as a possible pre-
mier. Mandel's real name is
Rothschild but because he is
not related to the famous bank-
ing family of that name he
changed his name to Mandel
30 years ago when he emigrat-
ed to France from Poland.
Stern is also no newcomer to
politics, having served as min-
ister of merchant marine in the
last Sarraut cabinet which took
office in October, 1933. Fros-
sard is minister of labor.

Their presentation this week-
end is "Die Eibige Mame" ("The
Eternal Mother"). H. Kalmano-
vitz is the author of the play
which has had long runs in the
east.
