Golsehmann Next Guest Di-
rector of Symphony

Vladimir Golschmann, next of
the guest directors with the De-
troit Symphony, will arrive Mon-
day evening and will be in charge
of the program for the tenth sub-
scription concerts to be given
Thursday evening, Jan. 30, at
8:30 o'clock, in Orchestra Hall.
Golschmann, a Parisian by birth
but of Russian parentage, has
been very influential in bringing
out many of the works of con-
temporady French composers. Be-
sides conducting in Paris his own
series known as the Concerts
Golschmann, he has directed the
Paedeloup Orchestra and the
Orchestre Symphonique de Paris.
He is well known outside his na-
tive land. In Belgium he has con-
ducted at the International Festi-
val of Music in Liege; in Brussels
at the Royal Conservatoire; at the
Concerts Populaire at the Theatre
de la Monnaie and with the Phil-
harmonic. In Norway he has di-
rected the Oslo Philharmonic; in
Portugal the Lisbon Philharmonic;
in Spain, the Orquests Sinfonica
of Bilbao and the Sinfonla of Ma-
drid. Ror three seasons he was
conductor of the Scottish Orches-
tra in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
He came to America for the
first time in 1923 as director of
the Swedish Ballet of Rolf de
Mare. In 1924-25 he accepted the
invitation of Walter Damrosch to
appear as guest director of the
New York Orchestra. He has also
served as guest leader of the New
York Philharmonic and is now
permanent conductor of the St.
Louis Symphony.

Josef Hofmann, the world fa-
mous pianist, who is coming here
for a performance on Monday,
Jan. 27, at the Masonic Auditor-
ium, was recently made the recipi-
ent of one of the highest honors
which the country of his birth
could give. This was when the
Polish government conferred upon
him the title of "Commander of
Polonia Restituta," on the occa-
sion of his visit to Warsaw.

Artists Theater next Thursday ,
Jan. 30.
The lavish million and a half
dollar production, featuring Ethe l
Merman, Sally Eilers, Parkyakar-
kus and William Frawley and a
glorious new array of Goldwyn
Girls, casts Eddie as a timid little
college tailor whose secret pas-
sion for a glamorous night club
singer, in the person of Ethel
Merman, moves him to take a cor-
respondence course in personal
magnetism, entitled "Man or
Mouse, What Are You?" Then
he inherits the management of a
huge amusement park and be-
comes involved with a gang of
slot machine racketeers who have
put every previous manager on
the spot.
"Strike Me Pink" was based on
Clarence Budington Kelland's
Saturday Evening Post story and
novel, "Dreamland."
