Children's Theater
at Shaarey Zedek
As evidence of the dynamic na-
ture of the Shaarey Zedek Chil-
dren's Theater and indication of
the great interest and enthusiasm
it has awakened in adult as well
as child members of the Jewish
community in Detroit, another in-
novation has been instituted in the
set-up by Saul L. Schlesinger, or-
ganizer and general director.
Realizing that a majority of the
Jewish children in Detroit have not
had an adequate opportunity for
discovering or developing their
latent talents in the field of play
production as well as other arts,
Mr. Schlesinger has introduced
training and study groups, com-
posed of children who feel the need
of training and development before
competing with other more experi-
enced members of the groups for
parts in plays. Under the supervi-
sion and direction of competent and
experienced adults, children are
coached in the arts of interpreta-
tive reading, stage-movement, ex-
pression, enunciation, and for act-
ing in technical capacities on pro-
ductions. As rapidly as they show
ability, children in the instruction
groups are selected to under-study
leading parts in productions under
rehearsal and if they demonstrate
definite talent will be used as al-
ternates in various performances.
New members of Mr. Schlesin-
ger's adult personnel whose serv-
ices he has secured on a volunteer
basis are: Miss Mildred Stocker,
Miss Jane Colten and Gilbert Sluts-
ky, who, with Miss Melba Sklar
and Jack Schlesinger, will relieve
Saul L. Schlesinger of part of the
responsibility of making certain
that each child in the group is kept
active in valuable and interesting
work.
Slight changes have been made
in the casts for "The Paper Hat"
and "Judith's Candlesticks," and
rehearsals are moving along very
satisfactorily. Miss Thelma Jaffin
has
Brenner as student director under
the supervision of Mr. Schlesinger
on the major production, "A Sick
