answer is, two things: member-
ship of the Jewish brotherhood,
and loyal fulfillment of the obli-

imposes. To be of the Jewish race

fhe approach of the Jewish High Holidays af-
fords me the pleasant opportunity of extending to the
Jewish people of Michigan my most earnest wishes
for a happy New Year.
The solemniyt with which Jewish tradition dic-
tates contemplation of a new cycle in the calendar of
life is little short of inspiring, and it is fitting, indeed,
that the more serious implications of the occasion be
recognized.
May the coming year witness the lifting of the
clouds which seem historically to beset the Jewish
horizon in other lands, and renew for them some of
the happiness which they knew in their home of
yore.

Again the Jewish people are on the threshhold
of a New Year. It is time for them to pause and lay
aside their work and think of spiritual things, To
Detroit Jewry Rosh Hashanah is a significant event.
It has been my happy privilege to assist this race
in many matters as a member of Congress and I shall
continue to do so whenever possible,
It is my hope that the New Year will have much
in store for the betterment and progress of the Jew-
ish people all over the world.

Marching and counter-marching, the Wandering
Jew wanders haltingly on. The year 5691, now draw-
ing within its heavy robes, brought little to cheer the
weary heart or comfort aching feet. Bucharest or
Saloniki. Berlin or Mexico City. Warsaw or Paris.
From Persian Haman to Prussian Hitler Jew-baiting
and hatred has been the world's most popular sport.
Persona non grata in every land where we are, hin-
dered in every effort to return to our own, we are
today even circumscribed in our lamentations.
The economic forces which have brought low men
and nations has spent its worst forces upon our own
people. Essentially a middle-class people, the process
rendering us declasse goes on apace. And in its pro-
cess Jewish communal and institutional structures
stand dangerously on the verge of collapse. Religious,
educational and cultural activities and nationalistic
aspirations are at low ebb. Depleted resources and
weakened leadership render the task of rehabilitation
difficult but not hopeless.
Phoenix-like, the Jew has always risen from his
ashes and has soared upward to new and greater
heights. Unconquered and unvanquished we are not
now prepared to surrender the glory of Israel.
One authentic ray of light, too feeble yet to dispel
all the dark clouds that hover over the Jewish world,
yet warm enough to gladden our hearts, shines forth
from Eretz Israel. Surrounded by unfriendly natives,
fettered by hostile bureaucrats, hampered by an un-
sympathetic government, facing formidable natural
opposition and handicapped by suspended revenues,
our Jewish pioneers carry on with an indomitable will
and with an unquenchable idealism. The Palestine
community, even at its present arrested rate of activ-
ity, has already abundantly justified the Herzlian
solution of the Jewish problem. The spirit of the
Haluzim knows not defeat. Marvelous as has been
their achievement, infinitely more glorious is the zeal
and ardor which animates them.
At this Rosh Ilashona season, when we review
and take account of the status of our people and of
our works, when we regenerate our spiritual strength
and vigor, when we renew again our faith and rekindle
our hopes, would that we too become infused with the
Haluz spirit.

Orchestras for All Occasions

It is a genuine privilege again to be able to greet
the Jewish communities of Michigan on the occasion
of the Jewish New Year.
At this time, as our United States are suffering
from the international crisis which has gripped the
globe, we have much to learn from the patience of the
Jewish people. Throughout the ages, Jewry has pa-
tiently borne the trials and tribulations heaped upon
it. It has emerged powerful because it has convinced
the world that its spirit is unconquerable.
We need the demonstration of just such a spirit in
the world today. We are in the process of readjusting
economic values and by the exercise of patience we
may hope to emerge more powerful and stronger than
ever. The Jewish people has, in this respect, taught
us a good lesson.
As we ponder these thoughts on the occasion of
Rosh Hashonah we find that we have much to be
thankful for to the Jewish people, and it is a great joy
therefore to greet them on this important and holy
occasion in the Jewish year.

On the historic occasion of the celebration of
Rosh Hashanah, I wish to extend to the Jewish people
of this city sincere greetings and good wishes.
In keeping with their traditions and customs,
they are showing today a keen interest and delicate
sensitiveness to the distressing problems facing Detroit.
With charity and comprehension they have come,
singly and collectively, to the aid of our more unfor-
tunate and suffering citizens. Their experience and
intelligence have enabled them to discern the political
propaganda which has aimed to discredit the work of
those in our community who would hearken to the
duty of government to its people in times such as
these. They have shown true sincerity and good faith
in maintaining in a modern age the high ideals and the
fine principles that they have fostered and preserved
through the ages.
It is a rare privilege and pleasure to wish them
a successful and happy New Year.
