Greetings
S
Courage is the chief blessing for which I am
prompted to pray as this New Year begins. I would
pray for courage not only because it is the gift we are
most in need of today, but also because I know that
courage is one of the things that can actually be
achieved by prayer.
Let us at the beginning of this, New Year seek
communion with the Spirits of the Universe, and out
of that seeking, let us draw something of divine energy
which shall sustain us in the difficult year that lies
ahead of us.
Out of our communion with God this New Year
and Day of Atonement, let us draw the courage to
face our individual problems with serenity, with hope,
and even with good cheer.
Let us seek not only the courage of our self-preser-
vation, but especially the courage of our idealism.
Let us find the moral power to exercise our sym-
pathies and generosities just at the time when they
are most likely to be forgotten—and just as the time
therefore, when they are most needed.
Let the divine influence drive all fears from our
hearts, and let us be as ready as we ever were in days
of prosperity to give of ourselves for our community
and for humanity.
May the New Year teach us the courage of social
vision—that aspiring beyond our particular petty
interests, we may all plan together to prevent in the
future this social disaster which we are all suffering
in common today.
May our New Year prayers also give us that cour-
age of peace, greater than the courage of war, which
shall enable us to grasp out of the coming Disarma-
ment Conference some definite measure of progress
toward that goal projected on the screen of the future
by the traditional New Year prayer of the Jew:
"And may all the nations of men join themselves
together to do Thy will with perfect hearts."

With hope and eagerness we are entering the
New Year of 5692 and leaving behind us with a sigh
of relief the year 5691, a year full of economic adver-
sities for the world in general, but for us Jews in par-
ticular, economically, politically and socially.
As usual, we are taking our share of the atrocities
of the world and are being chastized by the hand of
our oppressors. As our sages say, "No atrocities
come to the world only for the sake of Israel." And
one prophet, Isaiah, in X, 1-2: "For she hath received
from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins."
But we are also assured by this same prophet, in the
name of the Lord, that we shall receive our reward
also double. "Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people,
saith thy Lord."
And now the time comes after our double punish-
ment that we are awaiting our double reward.
We shall not feel the wrong done by political
hands. for the prophet says, "For Zion's sake I will
not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake, I will
not rest until the righteousness thereof goeth forth as
brightness and the salvation thereof as a lamp that
burneth, and the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness
and all kings thy glory."
We hope the coming year will bring to us all the
comforts promised by the will of the Eternal and by
the helping hand of our nation in redeeming our land
in Eretz Israel.

A period of liquidation and salvage seems to be
facing our Jewish communities and it is necessary to
evaluate all movements in Jewry so that we husband
our resources to keep that which is most essential. Un-
fortunately, or otherwise, there is very little agree-
ment as to values and frequently that which is most
popular is exploited for that which is most valuable.
The enthusiasms generated by the world was, the
sympathies created in a prosperous country like the
United States for misery in Europe and, lastly, the
idealism of the rebuilding of Palestine, have undoubt-
edly overexpanded the undertakings of the Jewish
people of the United States.
Prosperity has probably contributed also to the
building of too many and too expensive synagogues,
centers, golf clubs, and other buildings, with too nu-
merous and too large mortgages. For a time eva-
nescent good times seemed to make family relief un-
necessary and released money for social, cultural and
educational movements.
The economic crisis has brought us face to face
with many unpleasant realities. However, it has
robbed us also of our smugness and cocksureness. It
is possible that we may approach our numerous prob-
lems with less desire to show off and a greater desire
to serve.

My humble and reverential greetings, best wishes
and prayers for the welfare, prosperity, happiness and
peace of mankind at large and of Israel—the heart of
nan kind—especial ly.
May the Lord show Himself merciful toward us,
bless us, cause the golden rays of His blessings and
fatherly providence to shatter and to scatter all the
dark, dence clouds of misery, misfortune, spiritual and
material adversity that have settled down with such
crushing, destroying weight upon the heart of man-
kind!
May we always be conscious of the teaching of the
Bible that "as the father chastises the son he loves,
thus the Lord our God chastises us," that the purpose
and aim of all our tribulations and visitations are "to
bring forth good and work for our betterment at their
ultimate end," further that "the Lord tries us severely
in order to know whether we love the Lord our God
with all our heart and soul."
With such uplifting faith and consecrated hearts
let us meet the hardships and ditlicultiez we might
have to face the coming year.
But more than of all dangers and pitfalls, let me
respectfully forewarn my Jewish brethren and sisters
that their hearts may not persuade them to commence
the economic adjustment by cutting the expenses at
the price of the things of the spirit; that we may be
on the watch not to abandon and allow to drift for
themselves the wonderful institutions of worship, of
Jewish learning, of education, or charitable helpful-
ness, of social contact which American Jewry has
built up with such splendid generosity and such sac-
rifices in the post-war days.
"Lehman Chajacho," our very life, the life of
American Israel, depends upon the continuance nad
maintenance of these institutions!
I repeat: "The Lord tries us severely in order to
know whether we love the Lord our God with all
our heart and soul."
My final wish: May the words "Leshonah Tobah
Umsukah" ("happy new year") correspond once more
to a reality in our lives. May God will it!
