attacks have run the whole gamut of vituperation and
calumny. We are certain that the Zionist Organiza-
tion has had nothing whatsoever to do with it—if for
no other reason than the fact that they know the in-
tense feeling of hostility which has animated the Agu-
dath Israel in its anti-Zionist position. Such people
are not moved from their purpose by the death of one
of their members. It has merely intensified their ani-
mosity and strengthened them in their determination
to carry the project of opposition through.
If the death of de llaan was a political act it was
clone by an enemy of the Zionist Organization. for in
this manner the Zionists would be blamed and conse-
quently seriously damaged. It is amusing, but not
without its poignant note, however, to read the owl-
like wisdom of some of the anti-Zionist journals. "We
always told you that the religious Jews were opposed
to Zionism. We always told you they cannot agree
among themselves," and it goes in this strain ad in-
finitum, ad nauseam. One would imagine listening to
them that all the sects of Christianity are agreed unani-
mously upon all important questions.
The Zionist Organization should exert itself to the
utmost to discover the murderer of de Haan, for al-
though it will survive the shock of this indefensible
murder, yet as long as it remains unsolved too many
explanations will be wanted.
The whole incident is at this time very unfortunate.
The many immediate problems which cry for solution,
due to the large number of our co-religionists stranded
in European ports, are more than enough for an or-
ganization many times stronger than the Zionist Or-
ganization. This affair is just an added handicap
which they will have to overcome,

fine character, legal ability and his
distinguished career as diplomat and
statesman, expresses wonder at the
former Lord Chief Justice's accept-

Lord Birkenhead has sounded the
views of Rufus Daniel Isaacs as to
the sad fate of the man who is born

reason to believe that Rufus Isaacs,
who sat in the House of Commons,
served as Solicitor General, graced
the highest court in England as Lord

Britain when he gave of his talents

Leopold and Loeb pleaded guilty to the charge of
murder. This plea was expected by hardly anybody.
As a matter of fact everybody seemed to be very much
surprised. Why was such a plea entered? Why are
the lawyers of these two boys ready to submit the facts
to a judge rather than to a jury? Aside from any
technical reasons, what are the underlying reasons
which brought about this rather unheard of procedure?
If the boys had pleaded not guilty would it have
been possible to get a jury that would hear the evi-
dence, weigh it and arrive at a just and reasonable ver-
dict? Could a jury of twelve men and women be
found in 'Chicago with the moral stamina and suffi-
ciently free from the vengeance complex to decide the

concluded that they would fare better with a judge
than with a jury, This decision is very significant in
view of the fact that Clarence Darrow, chief counsel,
is as able a jury lawyer as can be found in the United
States.
From the very outset we have believed that these
boys are emotionally or morally insane and conse-
quently not responsible. Nothing has happened since
their arrest to cause us to change that opinion. We
