The new plant will have an out-

drinks per day. making a total of over

NE \V YORE—The 11'orld 1Var has
not only created many new economic
problems for the Jews, but cultural
problems as well. 1Vith the ruin of
many of the great spiritual centers of
European Jewry, and with the de-
struction of tnany of the Jewish Tat
intalical Colleges and other centers of
Jewish scholarship, it has come to
rest upon the Jewish scholars of
America to take over the task of de-
veloping and promoting Jewish
scholarship.
For this purpose all organization
was recently formed by some of the
foremost Jewish scholars in America.
called the American Academy for
Jewish Research. The expressed pur-
pose of this organization is "to enable
Jewish scholars in America to assume
their rightful place in American
Jewry, and to raise Jewish scholar-
ship to the &gritty and position neces-
sary to assure its healthy and success-
ful development in the future." They
seek to attain this goal by setting up
a high standard of Jewish learning,
by encouraging greater study of Jew-
ish science and by aiding in whatever
duty will lie to organize the Jewish
way possible those active in Jewish
research work.
Among the tirst activities of the so-
scholars of this country into one har-
monious body in order to enable co-
ordinated and cooperative effort on
a large scale. It will also serve as a
medium between Jewish scholars in
America and those abroad.
All American Jewish scholars who
have distinguished themselves by haV-
ing made original contributions to
Jewish learning and are presently ac-
tive in Jewish research work arc eligi-
ble as regular members. Prominent
scholars in foreign countries may be-
come corresponding members. At its
organization meeting the following
officers were elected: Professor
Louis Ginzberg, president; Professor
Gotthard Deutsch, vice-president;
Professor Henry Halter, secretary,
and l'rofessor Jacob Z. Lauierbach
treasurer.
