REPORTS DEMAND FOR GERMAN
MARKS AND RUSSIAN RUBLES
7% FIRST MORTGAGES
Matthew Firm, of 82 Griswold St.,
the well known banker, reports that the
market was good during the week in
must stocks. He said that Municipal
and State .hoods always have a ready
market, because of their nature, but the
demand was brisk among the industrials.
In commenting on international ex-
change. Mr. Finn said that there has
been quite a large demand for foreign
securities, particularly German marks
and Russian rubles, and attributtd this
demand to the character of the news
recently received from abroad.

A very instructive talk on stocks and
bonds by Mr. Edgar Seymour of D. M.
Woodruff & Co., brokers, and the semi-
annual declamation contest divided
equal honors at last Sunday's meeting
of the Philomathic Debating Club. Mr.
Seymour with pronounced clearness
traced the establishment of stock ex-
changes and explained the workings of
the modern brokerage office. He also an-
swered numerous questions by the mem-
bers of the club, who manifested their
appreciation of Mr. Seymour's visit and
address by an enthusiastic reception.
The declamation contest was up to
Philomathic standard. The speakers
and their subjects were: A. Shevitz,
"Slain by Drink": Jack Albert, "True
Americanism"; Max Cohen, "Our Crime
to Africa"; Robert Kallman, "Vision of
the World War"; Ralph Aronstam,
"The National Flag" ; Harry Batler,"Pat-
rick Henry's Speech for Liberty"; Irv-
ing Iskowitz, "Indian's Speech to the
White Man"; Harry Platt, "Peace Has
Its Victory." The judges, consisting of
Speaker Paul Goldstein, Louis Weiss
and Reuben Levine, awarded first,
second and third places to Messrs. Isko-
wit?. Kallman and Cohen, respectively.
Mr. Milton Alexander, who was to
have addressed the club last week. will
speak at next Sunday's meeting. The
regular program will consist of a de-
bate on "Resolved. that the Principle of
One Language and One Press is for the
Best Interests of the United States."

KING ALBERT DECORATES

Cincinnati—During the recent visit of
King Albert of Belgium in Cincinnati
he conferred the decoration of the Or-

son. In bestowing this honor, the king
addressed Dr. Philipson in French. say-
ing that the splendid service of Dr.
Philipson in the cause of Belgium had
been brought to his notice and that he
desired to express the thanks and ap-
preciation of himself and his people for
this service. Thereupon the Queen, ex-
tending her hand as had the king, ut-
tered a few similar words of thanks.

SCHIFF RESIGNS AS HEAD
OF MONTEFIORE HOSPITAL
New York—Jacob II. Schiff of Mont-
fiore Hospital, announced his resigna-
tion as President of the Board of Direc-
tors of the Montefiore Home and Ilos-
pital. The resignation, Mr. Schiff said,
was sent in last June but in a "compli-
mentary correspondance" which ensued
he was urged by the directors to retain
his post. S. G. Rosenbaum, President
of the National Cloak and Suit Corn-
pnny, Was riffled last Sunday to suc-
ceed Mr. Schiff.
Mr. Schiff said that his resignation
was due to the fact that after a term of
service of thirty-five years he felt that
a younger man should take over the
duties of the position. He joined the
Montefiore institution at the time of its
foundation, and will continue to hold
the title of Honorary President.
