I have attended the last four operas
and without doubt this year's opera is
the poorest of the four. This is part-
ly due to -the war with the resulting
loss of talent, but this is not the
cause of all the shortcomings. The
staging was not up to par and many
obvious chances to improve the plot
were missed. Most of the jokes
"fell flat." The principals carried
their parts as well as could be ex-
pected. The chorus men performed as
well as in past operas but the chorus
girls were far below the usual stand-
ard when men were taking the girls'I
parts. Men are not supposed to be
as graceful as women, however, in
past operas they were more grace-
ful than this year's chorus women.
The men were very rarely out of step
but only once were the women able to
keep in step, There was not a single
appearance of the chorus girls that
will be remembered as in past operas.
For example, who will ever forget the'
formation of the chorus in the pre-
sentation of "Men of the Maize and
Blue" of "Tres Rouge." At the De-,
troit performance it was encored and
encored until the men had to give up
from exhaustion.
In the future war operas let us
have men in both men and women
choruses but if necessary have the
women take the principal female
parts. I am sure that the opera as
presented in Ann Arbor would be
'poorly received on the trip especially
with three performances in Detroit.
However, it is reported that it will
