Best Introduction
Read this story.
Best Michigan Athlete
Mike Barrowman
This elite swimmer doesn't
belong in the Best of Ann Arbor -
he belongs in the Best of Earth. If
you glance at the media guide
description of most athletes, the first
line states something like: "Sure-
handed receiver" or "Hard-hitting
defenseman." Barrowman's reads:
"Top 200 meter breaststroker in the
world..."
The 5-foot-11 senior lowered his
world record for the fourth time at
the World Championships in Perth,
Australia in January. He also took
his second consecutive Swimmer-
of-the-Year award, his third straight
NCAA Championship, and honors
as a Sullivan Award finalist.

Best Play
Desmond Howard's 95-
yard Kickoff Return vs.
Michigan State
After providing the Wolverines'
only pass-offense in the game,
Howard's gazelle-like cutback tied
then-No. 1 Michigan with the spoil-
hungry Spartans, 21-21. We can only
speculate how fans would
remember Howard's achievement if
not for...
Most Disappointing
Play
Desmond Howard's failed
two-point conversion
attempt vs. Michigan State
Perhaps this should be subtitled,
"Worst officiating call(s)." In one of
the most inept displays by a group
of referees, these Big Ten
boneheads chose to ignore both that
Howard held onto the ball and that
he was tripped by Spartan defender
Eddie Brown.

Best Coach
Tie: Red Berenson[Bev Fry
Berenson led the icers to
greatness they hadn't experienced
since he was lacing up the skates
himself. After years of struggling to
gain respectability, the Michigan
hockey team reached the NCAA
tournament for the first time in 15
seasons and beat Cornell in the first
round.
Although less documented, Fry's
efforts with the women gymnasts
were even more impressive. Since
joining the team two seasons ago,
Fry has led Michigan from last place
in the Big Ten to third, and a
projected title for next season.
Best Performance
Jon Vaughn's 489 rushing
yards in consecutive games
against Notre Dame and
UCLA
The one-time Heisman hopeful
exploded into the Michigan
backfield and through opposing
defenses. An ensuing injury allowed
Ricky Powers' emergence as a
future Best of recipient, and
hastened Vaughn's departure for the

Brands at Big Ten
NFL. Someone should have told Wrestling Championships

tunnels in the line of scrimmage. Brands, ranked No. 1in the nation,
had never been put on his back in
Most Exciting Event his career before Gilbert scored the
Joey Gilbert vs. Tom 30-second near fall. But the referee
never whistled the pin.
The sophomore 134-pounder
dropped the major decision, 24-14,
and took second in the conference.
He later took third at the NCAA
Tournament, losing his only match
APPLICATIONS to Brands in the semifinals. *

By the way, the bucket no longer
says "Kentucky Fried Chicken."
Now its "KFC." Kind of like how
New Kids on the Block has become
"NKOTB" and Burger King has
become "BK."
Best Subs
Subway
Best place for subs is subway.
Wow, what a bold choice. Almost,
but not quite, as bold as picking
Kentucky Fried Chicken for fried
chicken.
Best Sandwiches
Zingerman' s
Again, you're not going to get
the quadruple bypass corned beef
of New York, but Zingerman's piles
it on. With the basic sandwich
meats, or with any of their more,
well, eclectic selections, you really
can't get a "bad" sandwich here.
And Noah likes the pickle.
Best Chipati
Pizza Bob's
You think you're eating healthy
with all those veggies and greens.
Actually, the wonderful pita bread,
cheese, and special sauce make this
a fairly caloric adventure. Would
you believe someone wrote on their
ballot, "What the hell is a
[chipatil?" Obviously, this character
has not been in Ann Arbor long.
Best Steak
Mountain Jack's
The best of a sparse lot. This is
due to the fact that Ann Arbor steak
establishments prefer to keep a low
profile for fear of having pig blood
hurled at them by tofu-eating
protestors.
Best Hot Wings
Mr. Spot's
Best Ice Cream/Yogurt
Stucchi's
From french silk to grasshopper pie,
Stucchi's has revolutionized Ann
Arbor ice cream.

Best Cafe
Best Coffee
Best Hot Chocolate
Espresso Royale Caf6
We found the coffee to be
playful yet articulate, elegant yet
understated. The only problem is
trying to keep a carry-out cup of
coffee hot while you walk to class.
Caf6 Pretentious is recognized
for more than its coffee. Remember
it caters to self-styled intellectuals
and avant garde cultural critics in a
myriad of desserts and beverages.
And they have a frothing good cup
of hot chocolate to boot.
Best Cheap Beer
Rick's
It's hard to beat the $1 pitchers
on Monday, the $2 ones on
Wednesday, and the 3 p.m. to 8
p.m. happy hour on Friday with $1
pitchers. You can't complain about
that, but sometimes it gets a little
too crowded and hot.
Best Place for Hard
Liquor
Village Corner
First of all, "you can't buy
there." Second of all, liquor prices
are the same, no matter where in
Michigan you go. So you tell me,
why was this a category in the first
place?
[Editor's Note:For selection and
convenience, you idiots!]
Hardest Place to Buy
Alcohol
Village Corner
They have a book containing
photos of the drivers licenses in
each of the 50 states, and Guam.

Best Bookstore
Borders
It's got no real competition - but
even if it did, it would probably still
win.
Best Textbooks

Best Used Books
Dawn Treader
When you come right down to it,
this store has a much cooler name
than its competition.
Best Women's Clothing
Best Men's Clothing
Urban Outfitters
Where else can you be ignored
by hip employees in cool clothes
while browsing through placemats
and bell-bottoms, dresses that make
you look pregnant and T-shirts

Best Thrift/Used
Clothing
Tie: Urban Outfitters,
Salvation Army
Ever wonder where the risqu6
crowd gets its clothing? Try the
Salvation Army, the store for the
poor, and Urban Outfitters, where
you can buy clothes that look used
but aren't.
Best Lingerie
Victoria's Secret
Competing with the likes of
Frederick's of Hollywood on the
national level, Victoria's Secret may
not stand a chance. But hey, it's the
only store in Ann Arbor to offer 300

Dark horse candidate: South

be the person who snatched all of
my undies from the dryer last year.
I'm glad you liked my taste.
Best Records
Wherehouse Records
A chain that replaced the social
wasteland of Upstair's Charley's,
Wherehouse features late-night

deals on new stuff. Also a terrific
pick-up spot.
Best Used Records
Wazoo
Never underestimate students'
ability to recognize a good deal whet
they see one.
Best Photocopying

adept at taking advantage of seniors
who need to send out resumds on
