A Message from Your American Friends
on Your 43rd Birthday
Dear Israel:
In the past 43 years you have built cities out of the
wilderness and gardens out of the desert sands. You have
taken in refugees from across the globe, going out of your
way to rescue your pnaersecuted and destitute sisters and
brothers in Yemen, li, Ethiopia and the Soviet Union.
Undaunted by your overwhelming task, you eagerly awaited
the arrival of two hundred thousand of these refugees this
year alone, quick to provide them with the hospitality and
support needed to absorb those weary from the boot of
oppression.
In addition, you have reaffirmed the bonds between all
humanity by freely donating your knowledge of arid
farming techniques in such places as Kenya and Texas. You
have treated children suffering from the horrible effects of
the Chernobyl nuclear accident with the same compassion
with which you have helped Egyptian refugees flee the
scourge of war in the Persian Gulf. You have, at all times,
been a loyal friend and ally of the United States.
We offer you our best wishes and our deepest congratula-
tions on your 43rd birthday. May your future birthdays be
filled with prosperity and peace.
