Carlin, Nevada, July 15, 1912,
Editor The Wolverine:
The Walker-Newconob exeditiono
from the university museunm aried
at Carlin, Nevada, on July 1. Cstp
has been established at this poitt, atd
it is probable that nost of the wcurk
will be dons from this base.
The party cossists of fle writer
atnd Mrs. Ruthveet, Mr. Frederik Galges
of Darttmouth College, and the Misses
Helen atnd Crystal Thompson, assist-
ants in the museutm.
A careful biologieal survey is being
made of fle part of the Great Basin
regiotn lying betweens the Corte and
Penyoni ranges. The region is entire-
ly desert, from the wase-filled val-
leys to the summits of the nmoustaits,
and the animals, like the plants, are
hose wito adaptations to the ard cot-
ditions. It to the country of the
rattlesnake, coyote, jack-rabbit and
lizards.
As a rule the work is rather exact-
ing. We arise at 4:28 and work ithlo
field uttil 12:30 or 1:00. After a ligt
lunch, we care for the specimens, take
photographs and do fle routitoe canp
stork, and after sipper develope phot-
ographs atd write upto toes until bed-
timne.
The experiences in the field and the,
excellent results saks up for the rth-
er tiritng workt butotwhen we feel toar-
tieularly in need of recreation, we lead
out and photograph our tmetagerie
which now consists of a tame () coy-
ole, ato active bul-stiake, and two very
agile lizards. Ater se have chased
these atnimals througho te sage
brush for an hour or two we generaly
feel that we have had sufficient excite-
nent.
Alexander G. Ruthven.
Throat Disease Victim Beter.
T. C. Caddigan, M '13, a victinm of
te throat disease wsho is seriously ill
at the university hospital, is restitg
easier. Excellent chances for lis re-
covery are now entertained, although
lie is still in a critical condition.
