CL ASSIFIED

McCarthy,
Crawford
Enshriiied
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (A)-Joe
McCarthy and Sam "Wahoo Sam"
Crawford yesterday were formal-
ly inducted into baseball's Hall of
Fame by Commissioner Ford Frick
at brief, colorful ceremonies.
"Gee; I wish I could do it all
over again," said McCarthy refer-
ring to his 43 years in baseball.
McCarthy Full of Praise
Marse Joe, now 70, spoke for
several minutes, pouring generous
praise on those who helped hima
reach this highest pinnacle in
baseball.
tVisibly affected by the excite-
ment of the occasion, the 77-yr.-
old Crawford said only a few
words of thanks.
"I had a speech ready but I
don't believe I can go through.
with it," he said as he sat down
with tears in his eyes, after the
long journey from his cabin hide-
out in Pear Blossom, Calif.
Crawford was one of the great
sluggers of the early 20th cen-
tury. In 19 years with Cincinnati
and Detroit he had a lifetime .309
average with 2,964 hits. His 312
triples still stand as the major
league record.
HasBright Record
McCarthy, looked happy and
trim after seven years of retire-
ment. His record of winning nine
Y' pennants -- eight with the Yanks
and, one with the Chicago Cubs-
and never finishing worse than
fourth, in 24 years of managing in
the majors, still is bright and
shiny.
After the ceremonies, a crowd
of about 9,000 jammed Doubleday
Field to watch the Chicago White
Sox of the American League
defeat the National League St.
Louis Cardinals, 13-4, in the an-
nual Hall of Fame game on the
spot where Abner Doubleday is
supposed to have scratched out
the first ball field with a stick.

By The Associated Press
LONDON - Jack Crump, Brit-
ain's track and field boss, said
yesterday he knew of no reason
why Derek Ibbotson's 3:57.2 mile
run shouldn't be accepted as a
world record.

will be fit to run at Manchester
on Wednesday,"- he added.
Many British sportswriters have
cautioned him to ease his crowded
racing program, and there have
even been reports the wonder run-
ner might be crippled by arthritis
in his right leg.
