(A)-Joe McCarthy and Sam "Wahoo Sam" Crawford yesterday were formal- ly inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame by Commissioner Ford Frick at brief, colorful ceremonies. "Gee; I wish I could do it all over again," said McCarthy refer- ring to his 43 years in baseball. McCarthy Full of Praise Marse Joe, now 70, spoke for several minutes, pouring generous praise on those who helped hima reach this highest pinnacle in baseball. tVisibly affected by the excite- ment of the occasion, the 77-yr.- old Crawford said only a few words of thanks. "I had a speech ready but I don't believe I can go through. with it," he said as he sat down with tears in his eyes, after the long journey from his cabin hide- out in Pear Blossom, Calif. Crawford was one of the great sluggers of the early 20th cen- tury. In 19 years with Cincinnati and Detroit he had a lifetime .309 average with 2,964 hits. His 312 triples still stand as the major league record. HasBright Record McCarthy, looked happy and trim after seven years of retire- ment. His record of winning nine Y' pennants -- eight with the Yanks and, one with the Chicago Cubs- and never finishing worse than fourth, in 24 years of managing in the majors, still is bright and shiny.
