RECENT RELEASES ON

University students live amid
far mare healthful surroundings
than they probably realize, ac-
cording to a sanitary survey of 35
Michigan colleges.
TherUniversity's sanitary condi-
tions rank high when compared
with those of the other Michigan
s c h o o 1s, Melbourne Murphy,
Health Service administrative as-
sistant and president of Michigan
College Health Association, declar-
ed.
THE SURVEY, partially com-
plete, is sponsored by the Associa-
tion. It consists of questions on
water supply, sewage, garbage and
rubbish disposal, swimming pools,
housing and food sanitation.
Conditions inviting back siphon-
age still exist but they are being
remedied as quickly as possible.
Most drinking fountains are sani-
tary and any not approved have
been removed, he added.
MURPHY EXPRESSED dis-
satisfaction with University gar-
bage and rubbish disposal. "The
refuse is sent to a hog farm, but

we believe it should be cooked be-
fore being used as hog food be-
cause of the trichinosis threat."
University swimming pools are
properlyemaintained and checked
for correct chlorination by the
Health Service Sanitarian, Mur-
phy said. Officials are extremely
careful to see that the pools are
not overloaded, he explained.
"But," he concluded, "I certain-
ly look forward to the time when
University women will have their
own pool.
