The English language'has over 400,-

the popularity of nonsensical stock

Sen. Smith W. Brookhart. Progres-
sive Republican, of Iowa, who has just
returned from abroad says that Pres-
idQnt Harding ought to come back
earlier than September to call con-
gress ,in special session to pass leg-
islation to help the farmers.
"If "we are to help the farmers at
all," says the senator, "congress must
take charge, through some government
agency, ofl the jmarketing of the big
crops that are coming. There should
be an appropriation by congress of
government funds to purchase if ne-
cessary, the staple crops of the en-
tire country and market them."
. Senator Brookhart is right-some-
thing must be done for the farmers.
Whether his plan'is good remains to
be seen, but the agricultural situation
cannot be left to the "lissez faire"
theory of economic settlement. If the
farmer suffers the whole country suf-
fers. Wheat is possessed of a strange
devil. It goes down when it ought to
go up. It is down a dollar a bushel;
below the average price of the last 15
years. In the meantime everything
the farmer buys has gone up 50 or 60
per cent. Quick action is the right
word, or elses everything else will be
possessed of the same strange devil
that is centering its attention on
wheat at present.
Someone tells . a story about two
frogs that fell into a tub of cream.
One frog drowned immediately, but
the other, a .more resolute specimen,
kept on jumj~ing until morning found

golden butter.

reviews, or whether Happenny and
Vogel are going to stick with the Chi-
cago clubs? The grass is practically
thick and downy in a little hollow
aoout 50 feet southwest of the gap
in the long bunker on the first hole.
These are grand evenings for a
stroll. No matter how hot it is in the
daytime, there is always a little
breeze rustling the grasses in the
rock gardens by the time the new,
moon as big as half of outdoors can be
seen reflected in the lily pond as it
pushes up over the top of the trees in
the forestry. You don't even want
to talk then-just walk, slowly and
perhaps hold hands.
Sluggards! To the books. SummerI
session is half over. But four scant{
weeks are left before you meet your,
finals and pack up your grip. The song3
of the robin and thrush, the soft hol-
low on the golf course, the vagran
breezes by the rock garden, these a'
not for you. Seek rather the blear,
hot lights and cast iron shelves o1
some seminar. There lies your duty.
For this is indeed an institution of
labor and learning, and these Jul;
nights the labor is all out of pro-
portion to the learning.

Congress is much in the same posi-
tion as the two unfortunate amphi-
ians. It must keep on jumping, try-
;ing some plan or other. It can't
sit back and let things run along. If
one plan won't work another will.
Villa and the Anibusli
Francisco Villa, Mexican rebel'chief-
fan, was killed in ambush yesterday,
morning. His career of crime has
disturbed the peace of two govern-
ments. In 1904, Villa became the lead-
er of a bandit gang and the whole
north of lexico was terror struck at
his name. Burned ranches, raided
towns, and the bodies of the dead
marked the track of the bandit crew
and its leader. His victims seldom
saw' his face. A shot in the back
from ambush was his method.
A shot in the back from ambus
is what took toll of the bandit yester-
day. Probably the man who did the
dee learned his art from Villa., Jus-
tice comes slowly-but it comes.
Sma ,pox in Politics
Senator Moses claims that the rad-
ical movement exemplified in the Min-
nesota election is spreading through
the west and northwest like smallpoy
and will undoubtedly produce a form-
idable third party. The outlook is
pessimistic thinks the senator. We'
doubt it. A third party and a demand
for reform is not necessarily a men-
ace. It will lead to an attempt t
remedy certain outstanding evils and
then subside. When people cry "Boo"
very loudly, they generally lose thei
-wind in a short time.
EDITORIAL COMMENT
JULY NIGHTS
(The Daily Illini)
There is a robin that trills in a
marvelous manner about 4 o'clock
every morning from a tree in front
of Natural History hall. There is r
thrush out in the forestry that puts
even the robin to shame, and does it
half an hour earlier. And in the or-
chard south of the golf course dwells
a catbird who can pass himself off for
either robin; or thrush.
Have you ever wandered down to
that golf course with two or three com-
panions in a like philosophic mood,;
and stretched out on your back be-
neath a million stars or so, while you

Dear Tarik: While I was in the
postoffice the other day a lady came
in and asked the man behind the
window to show her some nice red
two-cent stamps. He obligingly
brought forth a sheet containing 100
nice luscious U. S. stickers. After a
few moments of thoughtful consider-
ation the lady pointed to one stamp.

Court Comedies
The over-dressed, frizzy -haired,
tighly painted accuser took the wit-
ness chair.'
"Yes, your honor," she rasped, cross-
Ing silk-clad knees and pointing ac-
cusingly at the defendaPt, "I was
walkin' down the street an' that big
hunka cheese up and says, 'Howdy,
Kid,' I demand that he be fined and
get his photo put in" the papers for
insultin' a lady."
The defendant pleaded guilty as
charged.
"There, see!" cri'ed the dashing
blonde.
"Well, Well," said the judge slow-
ly, "what do you know about that, he
actually spoke to you did he!"
Then he dismissed the case and
hummed to himself while the court
baliffs succeeded in getting Miss In-
jured Innocence to forget it and
