' Shorts H ighlight Summer Sportswear

R SWIM- OA SUN-A one-piece plain playsuit is ready for SHORTER ROUTES-The shorter Jamaica shorts replace the
mming or for sunning. Equipped with a white cotton skirt, it Bermuda in this year's fashion spotlight. A brightly colored over-
ubles as a cool ensemble for landlubbers. blouse with a drawstring at the hipline completes the outfit.
I ARRAY OF FABRICS:
lathing Suit Styles Change to High Necks, Low Backs

By NANCY VERMULLEN
"Who wears short shorts?"
"We wear short shorts!" The
brief Jamaica length has almost
completely replaced the popularity
of the longer Bermuda style this
season, in keeping with the leggy
look introduced by the chemise.
The chemise influence is also
extending over other areas of
sportswear this spring. Its loose,
relaxed look has made the over-
blouse a favorite companion of
Jamaica shorts, with the middy
and the popover top choices.
Look of Ease
"Nautical but nice" are the
middies, with their sailor collars
and ties of red, white and blue. The
look is a flattering one of youthful
ease, that takes to the sea-or the
"'see"~-with equal aplomb.
The popover is especially good
in coordinate groups; watch the
compliments "pop" when you wear
it! Falling just short of the hip-
bone, it can be sleeved or sleeve-
less; collared or collarless.
More fun-in-the-sun news: The
balloon play suit. Featuring tiny
pants underneath, it appears in
leaf print and has a low-placed
grosgrain sash.
Playsuit Popularity
Some playsuits like the water. A
favorite is the one-piece plaided
cotton, equipped with its own lus-
trous white cotton skirt. With the
skirt, you're a lovely landlubber;
without, you're ready for a swim.
Whether or not you're a tennis
fan, you'll stand a better chance
of scoring if 'you choose one of the
new tennis tunics for your court-
ing-on-the-court. Triangles form
the little cap sleeves, and the skirt
is short and pleated.
Prints, plaids, stripes - They
run the gamut this season. Paisley
heads the list of prints, and coeds
find it fun to pick up its multi-
colors with a solid coordinate to
match. Stripes, the wider the bet-
ter, are a favorite with tight,
ankle-length pants.
Add Accessories
For that finishing touch, add a
giddy, gaudy accessory to your
sports outfit. Choose a fake Jacket,
hand-painted with pockets, but-
tons and insignias. Or "go high
hat" in one of the new straw crea-
tions trimmed with rope pigtails.
Or don a pair of ballet slippers,
appearing in all colors to match
beachwear.
Fabrics, too,. offer wide variety.
Spun rayon burlap types are big
news; so are the hand-blocked
prints on smooth and herringbone
weaves.
Anyway you look at it, this sea-
son's sportswear is guaranteed to
make you a Peach on the Beach!

Nail Polish.
Emphasizes
Gold Tones
The latest in nail polish news is
the new gold tone colors recently
put on the market.
Gold colors are 'available in
three different shades-rose, pink
and frosted gold.
Another new product now offer-
ed is the spray nail polish. The
enamel is guaranteed to dry in
seconds. The polish has no'harm-
ful effects and even contains a
mild antiseptic to avoid infection.
In spray products, several com-
panies are producing a quick-dry-
ing spray overcoat. Application of
this clear polish protects nails
from smearing while the polish is
drying and helps to speed up the
drying process.

Swimming; sunning, 1958 --
what's new on the beach?
Bathing suit fashions have tak-
en a new plunge - with a new
back look that makes the suits as
interesting in the back as in the
front.
Companies are featuring low V-,
shaped or horseshoe shaped back
styles with higher, more covered
front necklines.
Suits this year are also featured
in a host of materials. Cotton, ny-
Ion and elastic, 100 per cent nylon
helenca yarn, lastex and a new
silk jersey style will be seen on the,
beaches, along with some orlon
and wool creations.
I Internatioinal Look
And who wouldn't want to ap-
pear on the beach in one of the
new suits featuring an interna-
tional look! Styled for the travel-
er, these bathing suits would look
equally well on any beach, wheth-
er it be in the United States or
abroad.
Venezuela-style suits in new ex-
otic colors indicate a further in-
ternational touch.
Varied necklines in front in-
clude higher, V, square or scoop
neck shaped fashions, along with
cuffed, gathered or pleated bra
effects.
Appearing on the horizon in

cotton styles are plaids, stripes,
and both bold and subdued prints.
Most cotton styles have a shirred
back effect and many styles fea-
ture boxy shorts. Several popular
styles also feature brief sharp-
pleated skirts.
Black Remains Favorite
In other materials,ablack re-
mains a favorite, while shades of
red and blue are also popular.
Some boucle effects, a few metal-
lics and lightly figured or em-
broidered effects are also seen in
Ann Arbor stores.
A trend toward the 20's in cloth-
ing styles adds emphasis to the
popularity of the knit suit, an im-
portant bathing suit material this
year. The, knit suits feature a
variety of styles, some with wide
straps, some trimmed with belts
or buttons. Lastex styles, because
of their beauty and durability,
also continue to be important.
To top off this year's bathing
suit is a bathing cap in distinctly
flapper style. Beautiful fringe,
petals and flowers are included
in the selection, featured in colors
or white. If one really wants to be
dressy on the beach, a striking
velvet bathing "cap" is available
--with a bow on the back.
