Committee Reveals Spring Weekend Theme

,.

By PAT MORE
Popping up in the most unusual
places during the first half of the
semester has been a little fellow
with a rather elongated snout and
ears and a bunch of floweis
clutched in his small hand.
This little fellow, "Snootrac", is
the symbol for Spring Weekend
which will be held Friday and
Saturday, May 10 and 11.

Dept. Chairman Retires
After 34 Years at 'U'
Dr. Margaret Bell, Chairman of
the Program of Physical Educa-
tion for Women, is being honored
at a tea from 3 to 5 p.m. this aft-
ernoon in the main lounge of the
Women's Athletic Building.
The tea, given by the Women's
Athletic Association in conjunc-
tion with the physical education

The jolly guy with the oversized
head has appeared at several of
the campus functions dressed ap-
propriately. He was all dressed up
in his best bib and tucker for
J-Hop.
Goes Ivy League
For Gulantics, the Ted Heath
Show and recently when seen
casting his ballot at the campus
election, Snootrac wore his casual
and more preferred "Ivy League"
garb consisting of white duck
pants, button-down collar shirt
and saddles.
Last night he and his date ap-
peared in formal wear, this time
at IFC Ball. There they introduced
the "Snootrac Shuffle", a dance
originated by the Central Com-
mittee.
Snootrac, cartoons spelled back-
wards, was chosen by the Central
Committee because it blends in
with the versatile theme selected
for the weekend, "Cartoonival".
A Better Symbol
Snootrac was first thought of
as a theme but committee mem-
bers felt it would be too restrictive
for other events planned for the
weekend. Cartoonival, the com-
mittee felt, was versatile enough
to be incorporated into all week-
end activities.
Cartoonival, as a theme for
Spring Weekend, permits housing
units to bring out the best of their
imagination in designing chariots
for the race which will follow the
initial parade on Friday, May 10.
Chariots, drawn by students, will
be decorated in comic strip theme.
Later that evening the six fi-
nalists in the Skit Night competi-
tion will present their plays. The
theme, Cartoonival, will easily
lend itself to creative ideas for
plays to be produced by the hous-
ing units.
Torchlight Parade
Following the skits will be the
Torch Light Parade led by house
presidents from Hill Aud. to the
Diagonal. An all campus sing will
be held then with acts following.
Cartoonival provides unlimited
possibilities for the numerous ac-
tivities to be held at Field Day,
Saturday, May 11. Included in the
events will be a donkey baseball
game between faculty and stu-
dents and various other obstacle
and novelty races.
Ending the informal weekend
and blending in with the Cartoon-
ival theme is an unusual type of
all-campus dance. This dance,
Comic Cotillion, will be held on
the tennis courts at Palmer Field.
Informal attire will carry through
the casualness of the weekend.
All the proceeds from Spring
Weekend will be contributed.,to
worthy charities.
