Sororities Trade Ideas
On Various Problems
When sorority presidents met last spring at the Panhellenic
Interfraternity Council Greek Week House Presidents' Conference,
they decided it would be beneficial to continue informal meetings
throughout the year.
The group held three meetings exchanging ideas concerning house
problems. They decided to discuss a special topic at each meeting
including scholarship, housing and annex problems, alumni, and
community relations.
Discussions were also held on relationships with other houses
and officers within their own houses, ways to support campus activi-
ties, and a small evaluation of rushing.
Meetings are rotated each time with a different sorority presi-
dent acting as hostess. The informal basis of meeting has resulted
in better insight into other organ-

West Quad
Sound proof music practice
rooms and a quad newspaper were
recently added to West Quad
through the efforts of the West
Quad Council.
The quad added two committees,
House Services and Activities to
its government.
The Council sponsored two
dances this year, the Winter Holly
Hop and a spring dance.
West Quad house presidents be-
gan meeting with the quad council
president to establish more effec-
tive cooperation between the units.
The distribution of reaction
sheets at the end of council meet-
ings for the members to present
criticism was instituted this year
to encourage improvement in sub-
sequent meetings.
The dining room rotation plan,
which allows men's houses to eat
with Chicago House every two
weeks, was put into effect.
The quad government gave fi-
nancial support to the Radio Sta-
tion, Ham Club, Camera Club, and
Strauss Library. The council also
participated in the Big Ten Resi-
dence Halls Conference and es-
tablished a permanent dining room
study hall and a loan fund.

Junior
Panhel lenic
According to former president,
of Junior Panhellenic Association,
Carol DeBruin, '57, the major un-
dertaking of the organization Jast
fall was its flag sale.
Cooperating with members of
Junior Inter-Fraternity Council,
and the Junior Chamber of Com-
merce, Panhellenic pledges sold
flag kits to Ann Arbor residents.
A profit from the sale totalling
$1,000 went toward building an
Ann Arbor Community Swimming
Pool.
Since the president of Junior
Pahel is elected in February, Miss
DeBruin was replaced in Febru-
ary 1955 by Molly Dwan, '58.

OUTSTANDING GROUP:
IFC Receives Class B Trophy

Michigan's Inter-Fraternity-
Council received the national Class
B trophy as the outstanding group
in its class during the year.
It came as a tribute to the hours
of work put into the organization
by its staff and members.
During the year, a co-operative
food buying plan modeled after
that used by Pennsylvania State
University was inaugurated. Trial
periods given the plan indicated it
may grow in the future into a
successful system.
At present the IFC is working
towards eliminating bias clauses
in the remaining few fraternities
here which have them.

Since September, the East Quad
Council has sponsored numerous
activities and projects.
According to president Ralph
McCormick, '57E, the orientation
program, consisting of parties de-
signed specifically for Quad resi-
dents, was the most successful ever
presented.
The Council sponsored the Quad
level homecoming display contest,
win by Hayden House.
McCormick termed the Christ-
mas formal "The Snowflake Ball,"
"very successful."
Inter-Coop
Council
A coordinating body for seven
student operated co-ops, the In-
ter-Cooperative Council is a cor-
poration owning more than $100,-
000 worth of property.
The seven co-ops function as in-
dependent units renting their
houses from the ICC.
Their latest innovation was the
conversion last semester of one
of the three women's houses, Har-
old Osterweil, to a residence for
graduate women. The experiment
was considered successful and ICC
officials agreed to continue it next
year.
Purchase Brandei'is House
Interior renovations in the ICC
newest purchase, Louis D. Bran-
deis House for married students,
were completed last semester. The
outside of the house is currently
being brightened by the additioni
of a new roof and new siding.
ICC, which foots the bill for
permanent improvements in prop-
erty estimates the cost of the new
Brandeis exterior at $2,000.
As a group co-ops came out with
a higher grade point average last
year than eithe dormitories or
fraternities and sororities. Com-
bined average for the three wo-
men's houses was 2.8, for the three
men's houses, 2.57.

Tell Housing
Breakdown
More students live in dormitory
housing than in any other resi-
dence as a group.
More men live in private dwell-
ings than anywhere else, as a
group.
In a breakdown of student resi-
dences for last Fall's semester,
consideration went to nine cate-
gories. This totalled 17,416 stud-
ents (11,951 men and 5,465 wo-
men).
Thirty-six per cent or 6,352
students lived in dormitories (3,-
356 men, 2,996 women).
Out-of-Dorm Statistics
Private dwellings accounted for
33 per cent with 4,959 men and
848 women.
Fraternities and sororities tot-
aled nearly 14 per cent with 1,700

men and 709 women.
Commuting students numbered
976 men and 182 women for nearly
seven per cent.
Nearly three percent (140 men,
345 women) lived at home.
Just under two per cent, 342
women, liven in League Houses.
Cooperatives accounted for un-
der one percent (143 men, 61
women) as did the University Ter-
race apartments (228 men).
About two-and-a-half per cent
(449) of the men are listed un-
der miscellaneous (apartments).
In addition, there were 1,306
students listed as "off campus"
graduate enrollment (704 men and
602 women).
A nearly eight to two ratio exists
of married to single students with
13,674 men and 3,742 women.

completed this semester.
Two other projects are the in-
