Decorating of Yost Fieldhouse
'Not As Simple As It Sounds'

By JANE HOWARD
Transforming Yost Field House
into one of Michigras' major cen-
ters of attraction isn't as simple a
job as it might sound.
Since November Ruth Flanders,
'56, and Pat Goddard, '56A&D, co-
chairmen of field house decora-
tions, have been designing, plan-
ning, executing, and running into
sideline difficulties they'd never
thought of,
. s .
THEY hadn't considered, for
instance, that the endless feet of
paper and other material which
will fill the building had to be fire-
proofed. At first this obstacle
seemed simple: "All we've got to
do," they decided, "is run down
to Plant Service and have them
spray something on our stuff."
Plant service, however, could-
n't oblige. Neither could Chemis-
try Building officials, or the Na-
tural Science Department, or the
Ann Arbor fire department.

It wasn't until they'd thorough-
ly combed the area in search of
the elusive fireproofing substance,
all the while memorizing long
technical chemical product names,
that they found it's easily and in-
expensively available-if you know
where to go.
* 3 s
SURMOUNTING this and oth-
er problems, the indomitable pair
went on. One of the first steps was
construction of seven of their Walt
Disney friends, all twelve feet
high: Goofy, The Witch, Pluto,
Dumbo, Captain Hook, the Chesh-
ire Cat and Mickey Mouse.
Dick Faulhaber, '56A&D, and
Carol Ford, '56A&D, field house
subcommittee heads, have been
immersed with plans and paint
for the four book titles they've
illustrated in a 72-foot-long mu-
ral showing the four phases in
Michiworm's evolution.
