Candidates'

Students will elect 32 members
of the Student Legislature in an
all-campus election Wednesday.
Qualifications statements of the
62 candidates will appear in The
Daily today, Tuesday and Wednes-
day.
The following are campaign
tatements of ten students run-
iing together oi the Progressive
Slate:
1 )ax Dean .. .
Having attended the Madison
convention at the National Stud-
ents Association, I am for affilia-
tion with it by campus referend-
um. To lower expenses of non-vet
* students I believe the student
. book exchange should get perm-
anent quarters and that Univer-
sity - sponsored eating facilities
should be expanded. Veterans sub-
sistence should be raised. Discrim-
ination in athletics and housing
should be investigated. Union and
League should become student
centers for more coed activities.
Charles Gibbs . . .
It is my sincere desire to work
for the interests of the student
body and to support the Progres-
sive Program.
I am at present a member of
the House Council of Victor C.
Vaughan (House) and head of my
home town veterans' organization.
Hanny Gross ...
I am chairman of IRA and a

Statements
nember of YPCM and Hillel. I am
nterested in helping the Student
'jegislature in actively working on
he following issues which are of
lirect concern to the whole stud-
ent body:

Increasing the scope of our so-
cial and cultural program, estab-
lishing a permanent non-profit
)ookstore, increasing veterans'
ubsistence payments, retaining
-ent control in Ann Arbor, ex-
landing student eating facilities,
"ighting racial discrimination
uherever it occurs, implementing
the NSA Bill of Rights, establish-
ing full academic freedom.
Ray Guerin .. .
I am an independent man and
I am interested in extending the
activities of all independent men
on campus affairs. I have accom-
plished something in this direc-
tion as a representative in the As-
sociation of Independent Men and
as a member of the Union Public-
ity Committee. I could further cor-
relate and maximize my efforts as
your representative to the Stud-
ent Legislature. I
Joe Miller . ..
The atmosphere of a university
cannot be fostered except by in-
dividual student work and de-
votion. The student legislature is
a means to this end.
YOU, the individuals of the
student body, have not only the
privilege but the responsibility of

placing the best qualified individ-
uals in office.
Alf red Millstein.. .
The following is a statement of
my qualifications to accompany
my petition for candidacy for the
Student Legislature.
Experience: New Orleans AVC
Chapter Chairman, Campus AVC
Veterans Affairs Committee
Chairman, Currently YPCM
Chairman. I will work for: Less
restrictions on women students,
more social functions, non-profit
bookstore, raise in veterans sub-
istence, better eating facilities, lo-
cal rent controls, eliminating dis-
cinination, strong NSA, student
Bill of Rights,
Seymour Pustilnik ...
I shall try to bring about a more
effective program promoting un-
derstanding between American
students and students of other
countries and between students of
different religions and racial back-
grounds through discussions, lec-
tures and closer association. This
will enable us to make more intell-
igent decisions in social and in-
ternational problems.
(harles Smith . ..
Being a veteran of World War
II as well as a member of the
student body, I feel that your
problems are my problems. It is
'with the sincerest hope that I may
aid in the solution of such prob-
lems that we, the student body,
face here on campus that I soli-
cit the vote for representative tol
the Student Legislature.
Lewis Towler.. .
As member of the Westminster
Guild and Student Religious As-
sociation, I have had some expe-
rience in student affairs. I desire
to work with the Student Legis-
lature to help that body form a
program of greater service to stu-
dent life at the University of
Michigan.
Reade Williams ...
I believe that the student gov-
ernment can be a potent force in
bettering the position of students
here and all over the world. My
experience in the I. C. C. will be of
use in the campaign for a student
book store and improved eating
facilities on campus. I am also ac-
tive in MCAF and IRA.

The following statement is that
of three candidates running on a
combined slate :
Bill Brown..
Chuck McKean . . .
Jack Pflug ...
Our unified purpose is to make
this Student Legislature a dy-
namic and truly representative
force in University affairs rather
than an instrument of selfish, re-
actionary minorities.
A further aim will be the vig-
orous attempt on our part to
ameliorate short-sighted and un-
realistic social restrictions dic-
tated to the Student Body by the
University.
Statements of other candidates
running for the Legislature fol-
low:
Elinor Abrahamson . .
I believe that the legislature
can more effectively promote stu-
dent interests if its activities are
brought closer to the individual
students. This can be achieved
by greater publicity and increased
participation in legislature spon-
sored activities. As an independ-
ent, active in student affairs for
five semesters, I feel qualified to
do this.
Raymond H. Alm ...
As an independent candidate I
believe that the Student Legisla-
ture should be a truly representa-
tive group. If elected I will pro-
pose a plan whereby the various
schools and colleges elect their
own representatives in proportion
to the number of students enrolled
in each college or school of the
University.
Paul Anderson .. .
If elected, I intend to devote all
the time possible to better our
student government. This is my
first venture into student politics
and I am going into it with a
sincere purpose in mind: every-
one's viewpoint must be considered
when decisions are made. I shall
not forget this democratic ideal.
