With freshman Mack Supruno-
wicz leading the class, Michigan's
basketball team wrote a straight
"A" semester final examination at
Yost Field House last night, as it
rolled over Purdue, 66-43, in a
contest that was settled before the
echo of tpe opening whistle had
faded.
Suprunowicz broke fast after
the first tipoff, took a pass from
Bill Roberts, and dropped in a
layup to begin his 24-point per-
formance. Before the game was
two minutes old he dropped in
three more quick baskets to push
Michigan into an 8-0 lead, a lead
the Boilermakers never threatened.
Wolverine Defense Tight
To go with the sensational
shooting of the freshman star,
Michigan's trio of guards, Captain
Pete Elliott, Bob Harrison, and Bill
Mikulich set up a defense that
blanketed Captain Paul Hoffman,
and Bill Lodge, the hitherto high-
scoring Purdue forwards. Hoff-
man drew a complete blank in the
scoring column and Lodge, who
was stopped from the field,
dropped in five free throws.
Af ter Suprunowicz' opening
splurge, Pete Elliott ran the count
to 10-0 before Lodge opened the
Boilermaker scoring with a free
throw. Bill Roberts got that point
back for Michigan and Bill Ber-
berian, who paced Purdue with 17
paints, notched the first Riveter
field goal. At half time, Michigan
had run the count to 35-19.
Purdue Opens Second Half
Purdue started the second half
with a free throw by Lodge and a
basket by guard Max Biggs. Boyd
McCaslin's free throw was sand-
wiched between the Boilermaker
tallies.
Suprunowicz took over again,
hitting with two set shots. He
took a scoring respite while Hal
Morrill made a sensational bucket,
coming out of a three man melee
to hook in a shot in spite of being
fouled. He then made the free
throw. From this point on Michi-
gan breezed in.
Morrill, second high scorer for
the Wolverines with 11 points,
looked like one of the most im-
proved players on a greatly im-
proved ball club.
Fast Breaks Mark Game
The usual deliberate attack of
the Wolverines was used sparingly
as they matched the Boilermakers
stride for stride in a ball game that
was fast break most of the way.
With Roberts, Harrison, and El-
liott controlling the backboards in
the early stages of the contest,
Michigan's forwards repeatedly
broke into the clear. When their
fast break didn't take, the Wol-
verines reverted to a short fast
passing game that functioned with
snap and precision.

Publicity Led
To Hank's Sale
All Other AL Clubs
Refuse Tiger Star
DETROIT, Jan. 18 -MP)-Own-
er Walter O. Briggs of the Detroit
Tigers hinted today that the sale
of slugger Hank Greenberg to the
Pittsburgh Pirates might have
been influenced by national pub-
licity of a week ago suggesting
that Greenberg might like to fin-
ish his Major League career in
his native New York City with
the Yankees.
While not specifying that the
Bronx belter's outright sale to the
Pirates was an outgrowth of an
interview its "The Sporting News,"
in which it was hinted that Hank
would ask a salary of $75,000 for
1947 and would prefer to finish his
career in a Yankee uniform, Briggs
said in a statement, "In the light
of recent happenings, it was felt
that a change of scenery might
prove highly beneficial to player
Henry Greenberg and the Detroit
Club."
General Manager Billy Evans
declared that all seven other Am-
erican League clubs declined to
claim the big slugger at the $10,-
000 waiver price.
"No American League clubs were
interested in his contract at that
figure, making it possible for us
to s e n d him to the National
League," Evans said.
While it never has been official-
ly disclosed, it was the accepted
belief in Detroit baseball circles
that Greenberg's 1946 pay check
was approximately $60,000.
Several years ago Jack Zeller,
then general manager of the Ti-
gers, attemvted to sell the tall
home run king to the Yankees.
