June 23 Is Date Of Marriage

Could be the summer nights, could
be the 1raft or, of course, could be
love-anyhow lots of graduates, un-
dergraduates, professors and teach-
ing fellows in the. course of three
months have entered the ranks of
the married.
Miss F. 'Eliott Bell, daughter of
Mrs. Frank Elliott Bell of Ann Arbor,
was married to Karl Illava, in the li-
brary of the Edgewood School in
Greenwich, Conn. Mrs. Illava re-
ceived her bachelor and master de-
grees at the University and was a
member of Kappa Kappa Gamma
sorrity.
Following the bridegroom's re-
ceiving of the degree of doctor of
philosophy in physics at the Uni-
versity, a quiet wedding June 23
marked the marriage of Miss Ann
Tamela, '44, daughter of William
Tamela of Houghton, and Dr. John
I. Platt, son of Mr. and Mrs. t. W.
Platt of Ann Arbor. Dr. Platt has
taken a position at the University
of Minnesota conducting research
in biophysics under a Rockefeller
Foundation grant.

Julia Ann Upson, '39, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph H. Upson of Ann
Arbor, and Frank MacIvor Conway,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Con-i
way of Staten Island, N.Y., exchanged
vows June 23 in the Church of the1
Covenant at Washington, D.C. Mrs.c
Conway is a member of Alpha Delta
Pi sorority and of Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Conway belongs to Psi Upsilon
fraternity and to Tau Beta Pi honor
society. The couple are in Swedes-
boro, N.J.
St. Mary's Student Chapel was
the scene of the wedding ceremony
uniting Miss Jean Margaret Ham-
mond, '42, daughter of Mrs. Percy
'Hugh Hammond and the late Mr.
Hammond, and Ansel F. Hosmer,
jr., '41, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F.
Hosmer of Dearborn. Mr. Hosmer
received his degree from the Col-
lege of Engineering. The home ofs
the couple will be in Philadelphia,F

Louise Butler, '41, daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Robert Douglas Spencer,1
was united in, marriage with Horatio
Theodore Enterline, '41, in Hazelton,
Pa., this summer. Mr. Enterline ist
affiliated with Sigma Chi. After Oct.
1 the couple will be at home at 4006
Pine Street, Philadelphia, Pa.
Forrest Russel Jordan, '40, and
his bride, the former Hazel A. Jen-I
sen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.
V. Jensen, left after their June 10
wedding on a two weeks Caribbean
cruise. Mrs. Jordan is a member
of Chi Omega sorority. Mr. Jor-
dan, who was graduated from the
education school, is a member' of
Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and
of Mic igamua honorary society.
He was captain of the University
wrestling team in 1939-40 and a
lineman on the football team.
June 14 was chosen by Evelyn Raj
chel Mary, Tripp, '41N, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Fenwick A. Tripp1
of Aighland Park, for her Tiarriage
to John Millington Hutzel, son of
Mrs. William A. Hutzel of Columbus,1
O., and the late Mr. Hutzel. Mrs.P
Hutzel is a member of Kappa Delta _
sorority. She received her bachelor
of arts degree from the University
and was graduated from /the school
of nursing in January. Ole is a grad-

uate of the University and a member
of Gamma Sigma Delta, national
honorary, society in agriculture.
Rochester, N.Y., will be the home
of Dr. James Barrett Thompson,
I son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thomp-
son of Paw Paw, and Mrs. Thomp-
son, the former Elizabeth H. Allen,
daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Shirley
W. Allen, following their wedding
which took place June 14. A
University graduate holding both
the bachelor's and master's degrees,
Mrs. Thompson is a member of
Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She
is a member of Zeta Phi Eta honor
society and has been training in
case work in University Hospital.
Dr. Thompson attended Kalamazoo
College before taking his medical
course at the University?
Miss Anne-Mary Farmer, '43A,
daughter of Mrs. Benjamin Broad-
brooke Farmer and the late Mr. Far-
mer, was married to Joseph H. Buhr,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Buhr,
June 14, in St. Andrew's Episcopal
,Church.
June 14 was the date of the wed-
ding of Elizabeth Hegge, '41,
dughter of Dr. and Mrs Thorleif
G. Hegge of Northville and George
Robert Langford, son of Mr. and
Mrs. George W. Langford of Ann

marriage here June 14. A graduate
of Michigan State College, Mrs. Mor-
ris received her master's degree from
the University and is a member of
Pi Lambda Theta honor society. Mr.
Morris received his doctor's degree
in physics at the end of the Summer
Session. He belongs to Gamma Al-
pha, national physics fraternity, and
to Sigma Xi, national research soci-
ety.
Mary Mitchell Pekins, daughter
of Mrs. John M. Perkins, and Max
Arthur Finton, '41, of Jackson, son
of Dr. and Mrs. Walter Finton,
were united in marriage June 14 at
the Michigan League. Mr. Finton
graduated from the medical school.
The nuptials of Marian Hillman of
Jackson and George Hoyt Servis of
Ann Arbor took place June 15 in the
Calvary Methodist Church at Jack-
son. Graduate of Kalamazoo Col-
lege, Mr. Servis received his degree
from the University and is an assist-
ant in physiology. -
June 14 was chosen by Genevieve
Harriet Thom, '40, daughter of
William Bouton Thom of New York
City and the late Genevieve Riggs
Thom, for her marriage in the First
Presbyterian Church here to Har-
vey W. Clarke, '42L, of Spokane,
Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Clarke will
live in Ann -Arbor next year, while
the former continues his studies in
the Law School. Mrs. Clarke has
been teaching at Clio.
The ,marriage of Patricia VIaff,.
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Caroll Barse
Haff of Pelham Manor, N.Y., and
Maximilian Charles Schoetz III of
Milwaukee, Wis., took place late in
June. Both bride and bridegroom
are University graduates. Mrs.
Schoetz was a member of Collegiate
Sorosis and Mr. choetz of Sigma
Chi fraternity. The bride was also
a member of Scroll honor society.
Mr. Schoetz received his bachelor's
degree in engineering and a master's
in business administration.
At the home of her mother, Mrs.
Frederick Wilans Bacorn in Ann
Arbor, Gertrude Bacorn was mar-
ried July 1 to Dr. Peter Eaistman
of the University Hospital. Mrs.
Eastman attended the University,
and since receiving her bachelor of
arts and master's degrees has been
assistant in post-graduate medicine
and a bacteriologist in the Uni-
versity clinical laboratories.
Elizabeth 'Chubb, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Chubb of Ann Arbor
and Sgt. Roy Kimbrell, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy K. Kimbrell of Chicago
were married on July 5. Mr. Kim-
brall, who is staff sergeant of the
United States Air Corps at Scott
Field, Ill., expects to be transferred
soon to Biloxi, Miss., where his bride
will join him in November. Both at-
tended the University.
Virginia . Gwinner, daughter of
Mr. -and Mrs. Ernest E. Gwinner,
was married July 5 at the Bethle-
hem Evangelical Church to Karl
Horning, son of Mrs. Christian
Horning and the late Mr. Horning.I
A wedding supper was given at the
League by the bride's parents. Mrs.
Horning is a University graduate,
and is a member of Alpha Gamma
Delta sorority. Mr. Horning was
graduated from Michigan State
Normal College. He is at present
a member of the display advertis-
ing staff of the Ann Arbor Daily
News.
July 5 was chosen by Elizabeth
Grace French, daughter of theRev.
and Mrs. Leslie French of Caro; for
her wedding ceremony. The bride-
groom is Lt. John Graham Young of
Utica, N.Y., son of Prof. and Mrs.
Leigh J. Young of Ann Arbor. Both
Mr. and Mrs. Young are University

graduates. They will reside at 42
Parkside Court in Utica.
Carolyn Ackerman, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William A. Acker-
man of Ann Arbor, and Murray Lee
Adams, '42, 'son of Mr. and Mrs.
W. G. A. Adams of Ann Arbor, were
married July 12 in the First Metho-
dist Church at Wauseon, O.
Margaret Helen Whittemore, '41A,.
daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Harlow
Olin Whittemore of Ann Arbor, was
married to William Welles Lyman, Jr.,
'39A, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
W. Lyman of Norwich, Conn., July 12
in the chancel of the First Presby-
terian Church.
Miss Whittemore is a member of
Delta Gamma sorority and was elect-
ed to Alpha Lambda Delta, Wyvern
and Mortar Board, honorary societies.
She was the first woman student to
win the position of art editor on the
Michiganensian and was dance chair-
man on the League Council. Other
offices which she held were: cos-
tume chairman for the Freshman
Project; member of the Junior Girls
Play Committee and treasurer of
Tau Sigma Delta, honorary art soci-
ety.
Mr. Lyman served as chapter presi-
dent of Delta Upsilon and president
of Tau Sigma Delta. In his fresh-
man year he was elected to Phi Eta
Sigma. He received his master's de-
gree from the graduate school of de-
sign of Harvard University in 1940
and the same year won the Booth
traveling fellowship for Michigan
graduates. The couple will live in
Cambridge, Mass.
Classmates in the medical school
of Dr. Robert Thompson Plumb
have received announcements of
his marriage on July 22 to Elsie
Jane Burkett, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Edwin Burkett of San
Gabriel, Calif. Dr. Plumb is a
graduate of Albion College, the
University Medical School and will
spend his period of internship here.
Dr. and Mrs. Plumb will return
to Ann Arbor in October after a
tour of California and the Pacific
Coast.
Julia Ann Brown, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Otto M. Brown of Iron
River, and Lawrence Guy Battle, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Guy T. Battle of
Jamestown, N.Y., were married July
26 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Chey-
enne, Wyo. Mrs. Battle is a gradu-
ate of the University, having enrolled
first in Ripon College, in Wisconsin.

DeTour, of the marriage of their
daughter, Betty Ann, '42, and En-
sign Joseph Van Antwerp, USNR,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene I. Van
Antwerp of Detroit, July 26, in De-
troit. Mrs. Van Antwerp attended

Two Ann Arbor brides who have
been classmates through high school
and the University and who 'were
prominent in Assembly, chose July
27 for their weddings, both of which
were held in the League Garden.
The first wedding was that of Ellen
Cuthbert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Ivan N. Cuthbert of Ann Arbor, and
Kermit M. Webb, son of Mrs. Fred
A. Webb of Oak Park, Ill., and the
late Mr. Webb. Mrs. Webbis a grad-
uate of the University where she held

Killins of Ann Arbor, a cousin and
best man of the bridegroom, and,
his bride of July 3, the former Elis-
abeth Brinkman of Ann Arbor. Mr.
Killins was best man at the wed-
ding for his cousin and Miss Brink-
man, and at the ceremony which
took place on June 21 in Detroit,
uniting John E. Swisher, Jr., of
Ann Arbor and the former Har-
riet Dean of Detroit. The three
brides are University graduates.
Mr. Killins is a member of Phi
DeltacTheta fraternity. His bride
was chairman of the theatre-arts
committee of the League and was
costumer for the Junior Girls' play
this year.
Maxine Baribeau, '41, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Charles Baribeau of
Grand Ledge, and Franklin Butler,
'40L, were married July 26 at Grand
Ledge.

riage Norene Jadwin, '41, daughter

of Ann Arbor, and Elwyn L. Treat,
'40, of Dayton, Ohio, son of Mr.

Mrs. Treat graduated from the
University College of Pharmacy
and is a member of Kappa Phi and
Iota Sigma Pi, national chemical
society for women. Mr. Treat
graduated from the University as
an aeronautical engineer and is
employed at Wright Field, Dayton.
Kathryn Powell, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. W. Powell of Flint, and
0. Wallin Ladd, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Wesley Ladd of Sebewaing, were
married Aug. 9 at a ceremony per-
formed in the chapel of the First
Presbyterian Church at Flint by Rev.
Lloyd G. Brasure. Both are gradu-
ates of the University and Mrs. Ladd
was a member of the faculty of Dur-
ant School in Flint.
Betsy Bresse Honhart, '43M,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick
L. Honhart of Grosse Point, and
Ernest Frederick Brater, '34, son
of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Brater
of Saginaw, were married Aug. 9 at
the home of the bride's parents.
The bride attended Vassar College
for two years and is affiliated here
with Pi Beta Phi and Alpha Epsi-
lon Iota. Mr. Brater is assistant
professor in the civil engineering
department of the University and
this summer was with the United
States Engineers in Pittsburgh. He
is a member of Delta Phi, Tau Beta
Pi, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi.
Ruth Catherine Sauter, '41, daugh-
ter of Mrs. Harry G. Sauter and the

Phyllis Jean Wood, '43A, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo C. Wood
and Richard F. Stoll, '43, soirof Mr,
and Mrs. George V. Stoll, both fam-
ilies of Ann Arbor, were married
Aug. 9 in the rectory of St. Mary's
student chapel. They will live at
402 Hill St.
Laura M. Leuneberg, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Gustar Leuneberg of
Dexter, and Herbert H. Harper, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Harper of
Ann Arbor, were married Aug. 9 in
the chapel of the First Methodist
Church. The couple will make their
home on W. Madison St. Mrs. Har-
per attended the University.
Katherine Beatrice Schultz, the
daughter of Mrs. Beatrice M.
Schultz of Plymouth, and Carl
Frederik Schultz of Highland
Park, became the bride of John
Hendricks Jordan, son of Mr. and
SMrs. H. Floyd Jordan of New Ulm,
Minn., at an informal ceremony
held Aug. 11 in the Martha-Mary
Chapel of Greenfield Village. The
bride is a graduate of the Univer-
sity as is her attendant Dorothy
Munro, '42, of Fairfield, Ia. Mr.
Jordan was graduated from Ham-
line University in St. Paul, Minn.
and received his master's degree at
the University.
Barbara Joan Fairbairn, '42A,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Fairbairn of Detroit and Lt. Arthur
Burns, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P.
Burns of Calgary, Alta., and Victoria,
B.C., were married Aug. 12 at St.
Mary's Episcopal Church in Wind-
sor. Mrs. Burns attended the De-
troit Arts and Crafts School and was
a member of Alpha Gamma Delta
while in the University. Lt. Burns is
a graduate of the University of Tor-
onto and is in the Royal Canadian
Navy.

or classical society. Mr. Hazelton
received his bachelor's degree from
Wayne University and his master's
degree from the University where
he is completing work on a doctor's
degree in chemical engineering. He
is a member of Accemites, Phi
Lambda Upsilon and Sigma Xi
He will join the engineering staff
of Solvay Process Co. in Hopewell,
Va.
The wedding of Irene Fitzgerald,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis
Fitzgerald of Mercywood Sanitarium
and Dale H. Correa, '42M, of St.
Joseph's Mercy Hospital, son of Mrs.
John Correa of Ellensburg, Wash.,
took place Aug. 16 in the St. Thom-

nurse, having graduated from Mercy
College of Nursing in Detroit. Mr.
Correa is a member of Phi Rho Sig-

announced their marriage, which
took place Aug. 16, in St. Paul's
United Brethren Church at Canton,
0. Mrs. Porter, the former Kath-
ryn Coates, daughter of Mrs. St.
Clair Kelly Coates of Canton, at-
tended Defiance College at Defi-
ance, O., and is secretary in te

ed his studies this summer and will
go back to active duty in the Unit-

Helen Merle Douglass, daughter of

in marriage Aug. 16 in the League
Garden. The bride graduated from
the literary college and Mr. Cooper
from Wayne University school of
business administration.
Gertrude Nina Penhale, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry R. Pen-
hale of Plymouth, became the
bride of John Marion Hinkle, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher M.
Hinkle of Detroit, at a ceremony
performed Aug. 17 in the Ethel
Fountain llussey lounge of the
League. Mr. and Mrs. Hinkle will
live in New York City. Both are
graduates of the University and
Mr. Hinkle is a member of Gam-
ma Alpha and Sigma Xi honor
society.
Mrs. Rheba Benaway Brown and
Fred P. Cope, both of Saginaw, were
married Aug. 19 at the Cancroft
Hotel in Saginaw, where they will
live on their return from a trip in
Canada. Mrs. Cope received her
master's degree from the University
and did graduate work at Columbia
University.
The wedding of Eva Smith,
daughter of Philip H. Smith, of
Base Lake, and Capt. William R.
Kelley of Fort Benning, Ga., son
of Charles Kelley of Montpelier,
Ind., took place August 20 in the
garden of the League. Capt. Kel-
ley who was on leave, has returned
to Fort Benning where he is an
instructor in the United States
Infantry School. He is a gradu-
ate of the University and of the
Detroit College of Law, and prac-
ticed law here before called to
active duty.
Florence Lois Hisel, daughter of
Mrs. Glenn C. Hiser of Fairview Ave.
and the late Mr. Hiser, and Loren
Donald Wicks, '43M, son of Mrs.
Lena Wicks of Ann Arbor, were mar-
ried Aug. 21 in St. Paul's Evangelical
Lutheran Church. The couple are
living at 213 5. State St. The bride
attended Michigan State College and
