Ole Can Do More Than Catch Passes

PRESS
PASSES

Pep Rallies ..
NOBODY has asked this column's
advice as to how the University
should be run, but it seems a very
pressing problem is at hand and any-
way I have .an idea.
You no doubt recall last year's pep
travesty entitled "Don't Send My Boy
To Pep Rallies" or "I've Got Tears In
My Eyes Over You." It all happened
because a lot of people got so inspired
over the music of our great band
and the songs that they play, that
they decided to shag down to campus
town for a little jam session. The
whole thing was a jam. Broken doors,
noses, and night sticks, tear gas, and
University repercussions. It was a
sad spectacle.
Comes now another year, more
songs, and more pep rallies. Now
to my plan for nipping this pep
rally in the bud.
The managers of the two campus.
theatres rpust be prevailed upon to
change their shows this week-end.
The Michigan should present a
double feature, one starring Joe
Penner and his duck, and the other
featuring Zasu.Pitts and her side-
splitting humor. A four hour jug-
gling act would provide stage en-r
tertainment. There would be two I
"our gang comedies," five travelogs,
and six trailers.
The Maj would offer a double fea-
ture too. Greta Garbo would be the
star in both pictures. This should
be adequate.

Michigan fans are hoping they won't see this on Saturday. It's Ole

16 yards and a touchdown against Wayne last week. Lyle Rochenbach,

line. State won 34 to 6.

The mgrs. of both of these the-;
atres may then open their doors
wide. Anyone then entering
should be arrested on the spot
and sent to Siberia.
I have heard that those in charge
of the rally are considering the fea-

to hold the crowd. Now why not show
some choice shots of last year's Minne-
sota game? This should inspire the
audience to do nothing more radical
than go home and take a hot bath.
Seriously though, this column sin-
cerely hopes that students will refrain
from cutting loose Friday night. It's
an asinine imitation of the old "col-
litch" spirit-Holl'ywood style.

JOHN PINGEL, Michigan State's
superb back, should enter a se
rious bid for all-American honors
this year. Pingel has everything. The
Mt. Clemens senior, versatile in al
phases of the game, was never out
of action tlhrough injuries in 1937.
He had a season's punting av-
erage of better than 45 yards-
the best in the nation.,
He completed 30 out of 68
passes during the season-a per-
cer tage of .441.
.Ie averaged 5.7 yards in 117

is it any wonder that the big noise.
on Ferry Field this week is a lusty
"Stop State" and the echo comes back
resoundingly "And Pingel, too."'
* * *
SPEAKING of Pingel reminds me of
Harry Kohl. Harry is a minia-
ture sophomore from Dayton, Ohio,
up for his first year of Wolverine
competition. He's just five foot six'
in height, 150 pounds in weight..
You'll find Harry this week adorned
in white with a big 37 across his
chest. That's Pingel's number, and
for this week only brother Kohl is
starring in Pingel's great role.
He works out with the whites,
Harry does, eleven fellows who
won't make a trip, a headline, or
even a picture this year. They
are the chopping blocks, the Joe
unsungs, the fall guys for the
varsity.
You know it's a funny thing, but
sports are a lot like 3ife in general.
There are the big shots and there are
the people that' make them big. Of
the latter calibre are men like Harry
Kohl.
Yes, this column is pleased to re-
port that all week long Harry Kohl
is giving a brilliant and amazingly
courageous performance as John Pin-
gel. His 150 pound frame-and the
frames of the other men in white-is
being blasted to the four corners of
Ferry Field. Yet, he still has his grin,
his indomitable courage, and an ir-
repressible urge to play football.
Harry Kohl may be justly proud of
his unheralded role.
