'39 Petticoats
ProperlyCalled
'Old Fashioned'
Muslin Ruffles Appear
Below Dinner Dresses;
Camisole Tops Shown,
By SUE POTTER
The 20th century form-fitted zip-
per slip is a thing of comfort, con-
venience, and durability. As such it
is the delight of modern feminine
hearts. But, speaking of hearts, Val-
entine's Day is only the beginning
of the revolution in the maidenly
breast, come Spring.
Petticoats Are In Sight
The spring of 1939 is especially, a
period of old-fashioned demureness
and coquetry. In fact, along with
full skirts, tiny waists, and the round-
ed hip, comes an old-time muslin
petticoat. Right out in plain sight,
too.
The muslin touch is used most ef-
fectively in the current "little-girl"
dresses, with their short, billowy
skirts and pinched-in middles. Vogue
shows one in black moire and an-
other in blue alpaca, each equipped
with good, old-time muslin under-
wear.
Ruffles Billow Out
High-style dinner dresses find the
starched petticoat useful for making
a full skirt stick out like the hoop
skirt of the 1860's. One, like a da-
guerreotype of two generations ago,
is made of surah and green faille. The
enormous skirt conceals underneath
it a starched and embroidered "petti-
coat."
At the Paris Openings, some de-
signers even went so far as to dis-
play 18 inches of muslin ruffles be-
neath a black crepe dinner gown. The
ink-black tunic ended just below the
knees, as a regular street dress. Under
that billowed forth a foot-and-a-half
of embroidered runffles. Amazing,
isn't it?
Camisoles For Sheers
But, to get out of the exotic, and
into the less whimsical styles more
suited for wear in Ann Arbor, the
two most attractive slips of the sea-
son are the camisole-top petticoat
and the taffeta slip. The former is
designed for wear under the ultra-
sheer blouses which are making such
a spectacular comeback this year.
Various dainty materials ranging
from diaphanous chiffon to fine lawn
and muslin are used to make the
little tucked and gathered tops. Flut-
ing, embroidery and baby ruffles all
play their part. These same slips
often have a big ruffle at the hem-
line, with ribbons in pale colors tun
through it.
Heavy taffeta petticoats for that
long-forgotten sound of rustling
skirts is advocated by style experts.
In clear pastels, plaids or prints they
finish up many a costume with the
right elegance.
Oddly enough, it used to be a dis-
grace to have a slip show beneath
one's skirt. The scathing term
"P.H.D." (petticoat hangin' down)
was the most cutting of all remarks.

Leading Colors For Purses Are

envelope Bags Are Back;
Favorite Trimmings Are
Gold RingsAnd Initials
Of those little 'extras' which add so
much to your costume for the Easter
Parade, the purse is one of the most
important this year. Suede bags are
just the thing for spring. They should
ze very large and loose looking to
get the best effect from the material.
Large Bags Are Back.
The large 'envelope' bags are back
again. These really huge bags are
very convenient because they save a
lot of wear and tear on a gentle-
man's pockets. In fact, they are
almost large enough to carry your
books in to class.
The purses come in all shades to
blend with the spring colors. Ameri-
can beauty, fuschia, and chartreuse
are the leading colors, and deep pur-

ple and sky blue are running a close
second.
Colors Are Attractive
Chartreuse is the newest of the
colors, and it can be worn with navy,
brown or a deep rose or purple excep-
tionally well. It is a very attractive
shade, containing more green and
less of the mustard color than in
previous years. It seems to be the
Varying Tastes Are
Prevalent In New
Gay .Dinner Gowns
Judging by the prevalence of spring'
fever, the too-quick approach of mid-
semesters, and the sudden appear-
ance of balmy breezes, we should
gather that spring is here to stay, we
hope. Musically speaking, it "Could
Be," in fact it must b, according to
the calendar. One of the surest har-
bingers of spring surrounding us is
fashion and its new modes.
The influx of spring fashions this
year provides for the satisfaction of
widely varying tastes. The newest
styles in dinner gowns range from
the demure to the extremely sophis-
ticated.
Among the demure types appears
a powder blue chiffon gown fashioned'
in simple lines. The shirred top has
a tiny pointed collar and crystal but-
tons from the neckline to the belted
waist. This gown comes either with
short, puffed sleeves or with the popu-
lar long, full sleeves.

exact color to represent the spirit
of spring.
The smartest bags are trimmed in
gold rings and initials. Long handles
are again in fashion; the longer the
better. Black, chartreuse, and gold
are striking and lend a sophisticated
air to the simplest outfit.
The new spot red' should appear
in only one of your accessories and
is most spectacular when used in a
purse and combined with black ind
navy. It is a particularly brilliant
shade.
For the more conservative leather
bags are always good. Patent leath-
er purses come in all shades, but qre
smartest in the darker colors. These
also are very large.
For the fortunate persons who will
be spending their spring at a beach
resort, or for later in the'- year, you
will want white linen patterned bags
to match your costume.

Modesty To Be Keyword
For NewBathing Suits
For the lucky you who has suc-
cumbed to Gargoyle's luring para-
graphs on Burmuda and will be
boarding the S. S. Volendam on April
8, for six full days of crusing at sea
and a five-day sojourn pn the island
of beaches and sunshine, bathing
suits will be the object of much con-
cern. But Vogue comes to the rescue
with a showing of styles that will
make you the concern of others.
For the hours on deck beside thq
ship's pool, is a strapless bathing
suit of white linen, gored with red
and blue embroidery scalloping at
the top of a Brigance suit of skirt-
ed trunks and a brassiere top of blue-
and-white dotted foulard, piped in
white pique.
When the surf is raging and swim-
ming consists of gaily bresting the
waves, a Matelex bathing-suit, diag-
onally striped in red and white or
Jantzen's "Velva-Lure" white knit-
ted suit, scattered with shooting stars,
would match your mood.
Other choices for that exciting hol-
iday may be found in a periwinkle-
blue rubber suit trimmed with a bord-
er of crochet-like rubber lace; a
white rayon satin suit knitted with
"Lastex" consisting of modest shorts
(did you know that modesty is the
1939 keyword for marine wear?) and
a joined brassiere top.
