where, Professor Brown said. On
the one hand is a small southern
manufacturer at whose factory chapel

where employer and employee are in-
timately acquainted; on the other, is
the representative of some of the
largest industrial plants in the coun-
try, employing thousands of men. All
are heard respectfully by the Com-
mittee.
To illustrate the unconscious bit of
humor that occasionally breaks the
seriousness of the proceedings, Pro-
fessor Brown told the story of a
bright-eyed little Italian testifying
for the New York ice peddlers. He
was asked to summarize his state-
ment.
"You can elaborate the facts in
your printed brief," said Senator Har-
rison.
I am not going to elaborate," said
the Italian peddler with great earnest-
ness, "I'm just going to tell the truth."
After the ensuing roar of laugh-
ter had died down, Senator Harrison
solemnly advised the witness always
to tell the truth and never to "elab-
orate."
