Geologist Says English,
Economic Condition
Improving.

Frenclf
Is

Retuvuing from a three months
trip to Europe, Prof. William H.
Hobbs, of the geology department,
said yesterday that the economic
condition of France is very good,
and that England's financial condi-
tion has greatly improved since the
abandonment of the gold standard..
Professor Hobbs left America on
August 22. During his trip he made
a 13 day excursion into the Sahara
desert; and accompanied a geogra-
phical excursion into the central
plateau of France.
He was invited to lecture on
Greenland before a group of sci-
entists in Berlin but declined in or-
der to be home to aid the work of
the newly returned party from
Greenland. Profes-or Hobbs will
spend the remainder of his leave
of absence which extends, until
February, writing. ,

Surprise Formations
Are to Be Presented
by BothRival Bands
A promise that a number of sur-
prise formations will be uncorked
this afternoon at the football game
by both the Minnesota and Michi-
gan bands is almost certain to be
fulfille uif reports from both bands
are true. Since the meeting of the
two bands this afternoon will be'
the first in a number of years, a
rivalry almost as great as that be-
tween tle football teams is sched-
uled to be renewed.
Both bands are nearly the same
size, each comprising about 100
pieces. The Maroon and Gold out-
fit paa drilled daily for the past
six weeks on its formations and is
said to have improved over previous
years with the addition of a new
director.
Immediately upon its arrival in
Ann Arbor on the special train
from Minneapolis on which will
also be 2,000 Gopher students and
supporters, the Maroon and Gold
outfit will parade from the Michi-
gan Central station up State street
to Morris Hall. During the day, the
Michigan band will be hosts to the
visitors.
