the returning lettermen. Lawrence
an. aMa winner of last year, also
will be a member of this year's
squad.'
Last year Michigan set a new
Conference wrestling record by
lifting four individual crowns al-
though failing to win team laurels
due to a loss suffered at the hands
of-Indiana. With the graduation of
the four champions Keen is faced
with a .big gap to be filled. Otto
and: Oehmann were outstanding
neinbers of last year's freshman
squad, and together with the re-
maining lettermen will furnish the
nucleus for the 1930 edition of
Michigan's mat squad.
Eight meets are on the books
for this season together with the
Conference meet and the national
tourney. The dual meet season
opens early in January with West
Virginia furnishing the first oppo-
sition. The Big Ten schedule starts
soon afterward.
As is the- case 'every year a large
number of men must be developed
for the varsity. Due to the absence
of the sport in high schools ex-
perienced. men are the exceptionI
rather than the rule, and Keen isI
relying upon a large turnout from
which to 'pick the raw material
to be shaped into championship
timber, With the close of the grid-
iron season some of the football
men will turn their attention to
wrestling, and this willbe a further
source of material. If men can be
found to fill the gaps left by grad-
uation a ° contending team will be
possible, but this can only ate done
if men turn out in sufficient num-
bers when the first meeting is
called next week.

mark the beginning of an inten-
sive drill for the opening of the
Western conference schedule Sat-
urday afternoon with Ohio State
at Columbus, O . Tomorrow's work
will consist for the main part of
correcting .mistakes of the contestl
yesterday with Miami.
Since Ohio State has had advan-
tage of double practices this sea-
son, Coach Pat Page plans to util-
ize every minute this week in whip-
ping his men in shape for the en-
c6unter. This is the first Big Ten
game of the season and the only

iels at the wing positions. The re-
mainder of the squad took their
turn playing defensive on the op-
position. No scrimmage was sched-'
uled for the day so the respective
ability of the two teams could not
be accurately judged.
As yet Kipke has not introduced
any of the Spartan plays and for-'
mations to prepare the Wolverines
for the coming contest with Mich-
igan State. It is expected that this.
will be done later in the week with
only two days of stiff practice re-
maining before the team will be
set for/State.
Tessmer and Simrall continue to
drill on punts under the able tute-
lage of Kipke with the sophomore
threat having a slight edge on the
Wolverine captain. Simrall and'
Eastman were also drilled on block-'
ing. Emphasis seemed to be placedj
on the major faults of last Satur-
dary's twin bill affair, with back-I
field men working on blocking and
running interference before fast
ball carriers.

noon, Coach Pat Page outlined a
plan of defense to Indiana grid-
ders that will be used next Satur-
day at Ohio State to stop Wesley

and his band of cohorts. Fesler, se-
lect end for two years, has been
shifted to fullback this season and
l will be a disagreeable menace to

The intramural golf tournament,
an all-campus competition separ-
ate' from Coach Trueblood's varsity
meet being played off at this time,
is a match play affair, with a qual-
ifying round to determine flights.
There will be another one next
spring, at which time the faculty
will also play. An interesting side-1
[line to the regular match play will
be a special driving, putting, and,
approaching contest. All but let-
ter men may enter the fall tourna-
ment.
Sigma Delta Psi, national athlet-
ic.fraternity, bases its entrance re-
quirements upon all-around athlet-
ic ability. This is tested in a ser-
ies of fourteen individual events.
Three awards are dangled before
prospective candidates. The offi-
cial key, won by only 21 men last
year, is given to each individual*
who successfully passes all events.I
The fraternity cup, for the team
with the best combined record, was,
won last year by Alpha K a p p a
Lamda. Another trophy cup goes
to the individual high-point man.
All tests demand above average a-
bility.-
