HONRARYDEGREE
Penrod's Survey Shows Michigan
Has Given Special Honor
to 119 in 10 Years.
YALE RANKS HIGHEST
Has Issued 222 During 10-Year
Period; Only Six Give
More Than 100.
Although the University confers
no Ph.D. honorary degree at the
present time, Michigan's confe-
ment during the last ten years h
been larger than that of a majo-
ity of middle-western institutions,
a survey of honorary degrees by
Prof. E. B. Penrod, of Hillsdale, in-
dicates. Professor Penrod has pub-
lished a table of figures on gradu-
ation conferments of pro-merito
degrees which was recently pub-
lished in the Hillsdale Collegian
and which states that Michigan has
honored 119 men and women be-
tween 1921 and 1931.
Sixteen Give More.
Of the huncdreds of colleges and
universities questioned by Professor
Penrod, 16 replied that they gave
no honorary degrees, whatsoever.
Those in this category were Bryn
Mawr, California Institute of Tech-
nology, Cornell, Hood, Massachu-
setts Institute of Technology, Mon-
tana State normal, Oklahoma Col-
lege for Women, Reed, Rosary, Mas-
sachusetts State normal, Nebraska
State Teachers' college, Stanford,
Vanderbilt, Vassar, Wesleyan
(Georgia), and Wilson college (Pa.).
Cornell broke its long-standing
tradition in 1886 when it granted
two honorary degrees, but it has
since refused to confer honors.
Of those institutions which grant
honorary- degrees, Yale university
issued the largest number during
the last 10 years with 222, while
Columbia university, w i t h 213,
ranks second. Syracuse university
conferred 158 honorary degrees be-
tween 1921-31, while Dartmouth,
with 140, Michigan with 119, and
Harvard with 115 were the only
other institutions to top 100.
No Honorary Ph.D. Given.
The larger portion of degrees
conferred here consists of master of
arts and doctor of legal law, 25 and
38, respectively, having been issued
during the last ten years. Michigan
gives,no honorary Ph.D. and rarely,
if ever, a degree of doctor of divin-
it. The degrees:DL, DST, and Ph.D.
lWted on the Penrod chart, are like-
wise never given at Michigan.
Several interesting features of the
conferment of honorary degrees
'were brought out by Professor Pen-
rod. Many and irregular are the
types of degrees issued by the 89
univrst ies and colleges which an-
swered the questionnaire, among
the eerest being doctor of hu-
mane letters and doctor of human-
itles.
