T'lioipson wins Breast Stroke
The 200 yard breast stroke against
Iowa proved to be one of the most
spectacular races ever held in the
Union pool. Jud Thompson, sopho-.
more star, swimming in his first Con-
f~rence Weet in the Union pool, estab-
lished a new record of 2:44 seconds
for the event. His teammnate, Bob
Wagner, was second, while Merlin
Carter, Iowa captain, placed third. It
was significant that all three swim-
mers were under the former mark of
2:47 3-5 seconds made by Carter when
he won the Big Ten breast stroke
title in the Union pool in 1926.
Spindle swam a fine race in the
150 yard back stroke, coming within
a fraction of a second of Jim Hall's
pool record made by the Minnesota
star last season. He also set a new
intercollegiate record for the 220 yard
back stroke.

Ponce de Leon would not have searched
for a tangible fountain of youth if he
had realized that youth is an attitude
of the mind-that it may express itself
in the ardent enthusiasm with which
the pioneer undertakes to explore and
develop new fields.
To men of the Bell Telephone System
the inspiration of the pioneering spirit
is a lasting fountain of youth. This

impelling force has already broughtabout
such developments as the modern mul-
tiple switchboard, long distance cables
and the permalloy loading coil ring.
The telephone needs of the nation
grow constantly greater. To meet them
telephone men must continue to be
pioneers - developing better tools of
service and guiding the entire industry
to higher levels of usefulness.
