has been provedl that Baffin island,I
west of Greenland, is 6,000 to 7,000
miles smaller than supposed, andl that
Foxe Land, a bulge on the southwest
of the island, is not half as large as
believed, Prof. Lawrence W. Gould.
of the geology department, and geo-
grapher with the Putnam expedition,
which made the mia) of Baffin island
last summer, reports.
lie also declares that existing at-
lasses show Foxe Land to be 75 miles
north of its actual location. Profes-
sor Gould is expected to be the chief
geologist and geographer with Com-
mander Richard E' Byrd on a South
jPole expedition next summer.
Under the leadership of~ George
Palmer Putnam, the Baffin island ex-
pedition, composed of seven men,
sailed in a 24 foot whaleboat to chart
the unknown coast.
"The end of -our inland trek
brought us to the one interesting and
distinctive landm'arkt ejf the whold
region, a great limestone mesa from
650 to 700 feet high. This proved
to be a most interesting phenomenon,
geologically, for here we collected
-many fossils," Professor Gould ex-
plained.
"Many of these forms demonstrate.
that some three or four hundred mil-
lions of years ago a warm tropical
sea extended from, where is now the
Gulf of Mexico to the very top of
the earth."
