MARTIN LIKELY STARTER
URBANA, Feb. 24- Keyed to the
highest pitch to stop the Wolverines
in their championship drive, CoachI
Ruby's basketball quintet went
through its last stiff practice today in
preparation for the invasion.
In view of the close contest which
the Illini gave the Michigan team on
th'e latter's home floor, neither team
is, considered a favorite in tonight's
bathe. Coach Ruby has been forced!
to revamp his lineup to gain some
added punch, while the Michigan team;
which suffered a defeat at the hands
of Indiana, seems to have emerged
from its slump as shown by the Chi-f
cago game.
Coach Ruby declined to announce
his lineup after the practice lastj
night. The team which faced the Wol-1
verines for the first game was very
ieffective, but a special defense has
been prepared by Coach Ruby for that
particular encounter and there is little
doubt entertained that Coach Mather
will hA re developed a new style of
play to cope with the impregnable
defensive game.
Olson Vies For Position
Capt. Daugherity, one of the leading
players in the Conference, is certain
to start at one of the forwards, but
the other selection,is uncertain. Dor
and Olson are favored for the post.
Dorn fias shown exceptional form in
other Big Ten frays, and indications
are that' he will receive the call,
though Olson's work has been good of
late. Lindsay is the most likely starter
at center, while McKay and Reynolds
will probably take the guard positions.
If the Illini attack proves ineffec-
tive with Dorn or Olson in the line-
up, Coach Ruby will call upon Green
as a substitute forward while Wa-
chowski may be chosen at any time to
replace McKay as a defensive man.
The Illinois five will probably Tely
}upon a five man defense to meet the
Wolverine attack. The work of the_
Michigan defense in other games has
proven that a long shot offense is par-
ticularly effective, and Coach Ruby
-may try this method of scoring if the
invaders play their usual close guard-
.ing game near the basket. Daugher-
ityv's removal from the first game on
personal fouls greatly weakened the
%team, in the closing minutes of play
at Ann Arbor, and it is hoped. that he
will be able to sink enough shots In
this fray to make up for the 25-24
,.ossr
Lead Hinges on Outcome
It is expected that the invading Wol-
verine lineu~p will be the same as the
one that has faced opponents through-
out the season. Harrigan and Ooster-
baaa wil be at the forwards, McCoy
at center, and Capt. Chamilers and
SPetrie at -guards. However, Martin is
a likely substitute for Petrie if the
Michigan coach. decides to shift his
starting quintet, as he did in the Chi-
cago game.
Despite the fact that the Illini are
'tied for only fourth place in the Big
Ten standing, the ;game tonight is a
very; important one. An Illinois vic-
tory will knock the Wolverines from
the lead in the standing, regardless of
whether Wisconsin or Indiana wins
ttheir game' at Bloomington tomorrow.
On the other hand, a Michigan win
will more firmly entrench the team
in. first place if Indiana downs the
Badgers, while a Hoosier defeat will
leave Michigan tied with Wisconsin,
with seven games won and two lost.
The Illinois aggregation, having
been. defeated three times, may still
stay in the running by defeating Mich-
igan, and then downing Wisconsin in
the game at Urbana Monday.
