the Art of Typography," Dr. HenryE
Guppy, president of the. British Li-
brary association and librarian of the

Tphe John Rylands lib~rary was
founded as a memorial to Rylands,
who wa s a British manufacturer and
pliiLan . bropist of the nineteenth cent-
,ury, by his widow. The library be-
gait with the Earl of Spencer's collec-
tion of block-books, which were print-,
ed from carvedl and engraved blocks
of wood similar to the modern wood-
cut. Tfhe library has also a large
number of incunabula-books printed
before 1500-including "Ars Morien-
di" and "Biblia Paulperumn" which
consists mainly of pictures with a
small amount of printing underneath.
