Ele ctropl1ating Industry H as Entered
New Era, Declares Michigan Professor
Ii
That the electroplating industry has the present system of scientific controlj

R

just entered a new era, is the opinion
OfProf. Edwin M. B~aker, of the chem-
Cal cngineering department, who
h-a' just returned' from Wash-j
Jngton, D. C., where he lead a1
round table discussion of more
dean 200' of the leading electro-
plating authorities of the United
States. This discussion was part off
he program of the American Elec-
trochemcal society which just con-
cluded its semi-annual convention.
The ubject of the discussion, of which
P rofessor Baker is a recognized au-
toiywas the "Preparation of Elec-
Iiin speaking of this phase of electro-
4~heemical engineering which he has
made his specialty, he declared that
" in past years, men with unusual
nural ability prepared the deposi-
Iryj metals, which they sold, under
tiad 4 names. This was without any
assurance that these metals, prepared
iiiiscientifically, would withstand the
1,4st for which they were sold. Under

and exactitude, the industry has be-
come reorganizcd and is undergoing
a great advancement. Thus the induzs-
try has entered a new era, that of sci-
entific control and operation."
Although many men have been
placed ini positions in- the electroplat-
ing industry after graduating from
the University, requests from com-
panics for men trained in the electro-
plating phase, have greatly outnum-
bered the supply.
The chemical engineering depart-
ment has at present no special course
in electroplating, thus 1tecessitating
all work of this kind to be dlone in
research courses.
Professor Baker also holds the po-
sition of consulting engineer for a
company which does a' large electro-
plating business. In fact, an order
of nickel for electroplating recently
placed by Professor Baker for this
company, is three times as large as
all the nickel used for electroplating
in the British Isles for the past year.
