BLANCIHARD CALLS HERTZ SYSTEMI
RPVOLUTION IN TRANSPORTATION

S

In the opinion of Prof. A. H. Blan-
chard of the civil engineering (lepart-
ment, the Hertz "Driveurself" sy.
tern, which is an attempt to make a
nation wide application of the old
livery principle to the automobile,
marks a "revolution in motor vehiclel
transportation and is the greatest
economic development in that field
,since the automobile became a factor
in transport." Professor Blanchardi
recently inspected the Hertz plants on
a trip to Chicago.
The problem which the new plan
would solve on a country wide scale
, is that of high maintenance and over-
head costs for the motor car ¢of the
average citizen. Except in the enor-
Imity of its scope, the solution fol- I
lows the idea, of the old livery stable.I
A coast-to-coast chain of Hertz sta-I
tLions ili more than two hundred cities
and towns, is now available to the
motor driving public. Whenever an
individual, who has procured a Hertz
driving certificate, wishes automobile,
service, he obtains a car from any one
cif the stations at a specified rate. By
this greater use of one car, it is econ-
omtically possible to cut overhead ex-
penses and provide services at a frac-
tion of the present day costs.
According to Professor Blanchard, a
Hertz station will be established in
Ann Arbor in the near future, which,
will be connected with the system
which has now been established in all
parts of the country.
