(By Associated Press)
WASHINGTON, Jan. 5.-Army air
experts believe that in the exhaust
stack they have found the firebug
largely responsible for the tendency
of crashed planes to burst into flames
and which has cost many lives. The!
much repeated "flaming coffins" desig-
nation of certain old types of army
planes by Colonel William Mitchell
arose from this tendency.
An air service report said that thirty
crash tests were conducted on obso-
lete airplanes. It was discovered that
the exhaust stack was a very serious
source of fire, and that if it were pos-
sible to so design an exhause stack
that it would be cool enough, to pre-
vent the self-ignition of gasoline or
oil sprayed into the stack, the num-
ber of fires would be very greatly
reduced.
"Preliminary designs of standard
length, water-cooled exhaust mani-
folds and short, air-cooled manifolds
have shown that it is entirely possible
to prevent fires from this source,"
said the report.
