The! much repeated "flaming coffins" desig- nation of certain old types of army planes by Colonel William Mitchell arose from this tendency. An air service report said that thirty crash tests were conducted on obso- lete airplanes. It was discovered that the exhaust stack was a very serious source of fire, and that if it were pos- sible to so design an exhause stack that it would be cool enough, to pre- vent the self-ignition of gasoline or oil sprayed into the stack, the num- ber of fires would be very greatly reduced. "Preliminary designs of standard length, water-cooled exhaust mani- folds and short, air-cooled manifolds have shown that it is entirely possible to prevent fires from this source," said the report.
