A Anderson, B-lew: Iliruma Leppar
A thrilling escape in accordance with the best dim novel' tradition was successfully engineered by four
prisoners in the federal penitentary at Atlanta, Ga., by digging under the walls of the prison, which are 50 feet
high. The tunnel, barely large enough to admit a man, led from a prison tubercular tent to the outside. It is
estimated that several months were required for the excavation.
The tent was occupied by Frank Haynes, of Knoxville, Tenn., coun terfeiter, and Hiram Lepper, of Mary-
land, who figured in a sensational escape some time ago, only to be captur ed in Minneapolis and returned to fin-
ish his 15 year sentence. The other two who broke out, Ludwig Schmidt , of Tonawanda, N. Y., serving 10 years
for mail robbery and George Anderson, serving 25 years for participation in the sensational $1,000,000 New York
main holdup, had no chance to aid in the excavation, being inmates of a cell house, with frecdom of the grounds
only one day a week.
