the Freihaus Theater in Vienna and
Mozart's librettist, is tricked into en-
gaging Demoiselle Ulich as a member
of his comnpany. The director's ne-
p)hew, Philip, is in love with Denoi-
selle Uih but the director refusesI
to have a niece-in-law in his organ-
ization. So Demoiselle Uhlich pretends
to be' an Italian singer named Caval-
ieri and is engaged in a scene. of
tipamking- comedy with Madame Hof-I
er, the imptresario's prima donna as-
soluta. in this scene, the two singers
go through a contest in song and in
jealousy in a manner that is as funny
a?; it is ~te The music for thes9
two so>pran.os is of 'a bravura char-
acter, notable for th~e numerous and
difficult hiigh notes which it containsl
h~inat occurs frequently, while in
one place there is a high F. The buoy-
ancy and wonderful finesse in which
