Edi, or The Michigan Daily:
Within the past ten days six cases
of diptheria have been admitted to the
Contagious hospital and twb more
have applied for admittance which
could not he received for lack of room.
All cases, except one, developed in
the city. Other cases of diptheria
4have been reported from neighboring
towns and villages. Material from a
case of black diptheria was brought
to us from Belleville yesterday and
proved to be positive:
Many of Nasal Type
Many of the cases of diptheria are
of the nasal type and were rather far
advanced when first seen. They were
regarded as ordinary cases of head
cold. There is strong evidence that
diptheria of a virulent form is present

in the vicinity. We advise that all
cases of head colds should be care-
fully watched. The nasal discharge
that becomes tinged with blood should
be regarded as suspicious of nasal
diptheria.
We advise that Schick tests be made
to determine whether the individual's
natural resistance is high enough to
prevent the developmnt of diptheria
and, if it is not, that prophylactic
treatment with toxin antitoxin mix-
ture be given.
Should be Treated
All people suffering from diptheria
should be treated with diptheria anti-
toxin by hypodermic intramuscular,
or intravenous injection. Diptheria
antitoxin is of no benefit when given
by mouth. Antitoxin will cure all
cases of diptheria if it is administered
early enough. It cannot neutralize
toxin that has already gone into chemi-
cal union with the tissues and has
become bound and thereby, has de-
stroyed the tissues attacked.

Latest reports from Librarian W.
W. Bishop state that he has completed
his work in England and is now buy-
ing books :n Brussels and Antwerp.
He will go next to Cologne, Coblenz
and Lipzig.
Students desiring to use the refer-
ence books in the lower study hall, on
the first floor, have been unable to
find seats on several occasions dur
ing the past week, due to the presence
of students who were studying with
their own books. The lower study
hall, where more than 2000 books are
on reference, is for the exclusive use
of members of classes who must use
those books. Others are requested to
use the main reading room on the
second floor.
"The more I see of libraries here
the more I admire my own-and my
people," writes Librarian Bishop in
comparing foreign libraries with
Michigan's. He adds that card cata-
logues are practically unknown there.
The exhibition of Dante's works,
which has been in the lower corridor
of the library for several weeks, will
be there today for the last time. To-
morrow it will be replaced ley a new
exhibit.
Of the most popular books of fic-
tion for the summer, according to
statistics prepared for the American
library association, four can be had
at the Library. They are, in the order
of their popularity in all parts of the
country, "Main Street," -by Lewis; "The
Brimming Cup," by Canfield; "Alice
Adams," by Tarkington; and "The
Age of Innocence," by Wharton.
"Moon Calf," by Dell, which was list-
ed as a favorite in some sections of'
the country, is also available.
H. G. Well's "Outlines of History,"
reported to be the most popular of
general books for the- summer, can be
had at the corridor desk. It is in two
volumes.
Librarian W. W. Bishop has spent
approximately $7,000 frr new books
in Great Britain. He reports his
greatest success in the fields of Eng-
lish drama, Scottish history, bibio-
graphies and zoological journals.
