(By Wallace F. Elliott).
As Ring Lardner, the sports humor-
ist incomparable, once put it, "the stu-
dents of Centre college, all 11 of
them, invaded Cambridge today." Ring
has a keen eye for incongruity. While
the sum total of the personnel of
Centre's student body numbers a wee
bit more than 11, the gridiron battle
which will take place today between
Centre and Harvard has all the as-
pects of that most famous contest,
known to the Biblical sporting fans
as "David vs. Goliath". Dave, eleven
times multiplied, has girded his loins,
rubbed dirt on his hands, picked up a
solid, healthy young dornick, and
placed it in his little sling. Goliath,
likewise increased by eleven multi-
ples, is advancing, his crimson tunic
stained by the history of his actions
during the past three weeks, whereas
the brilliant orange "doohicky" which
decorates his opponent from the neck
down is still spotless.
Dreams, strange dreams! What
might that individual be, whom we
see standing in the center of the scene
of action? His garb is of the whitest,
save for a sweater of some indiscrim-
inate color on the face of which ap-
pears a large letter. He turns to the
army of the Phillistines, banked about
a great concrete inclosure, and then
to an infinitesimal collection of per-

haps one man, whose piping voice has
once been heard to cry, "Yea, David.
Fight 'em." The individual of mystery
raises his voice in sonorous speech.
"On thy north, ladies and gents, is
Old Man Goliath himself, commonly
known as Johnny Harvard. Last year
he met and defeated on this field the
lad who opposes him today. We watch
and wait, some of us, perhaps, hoping
that history will repeat itself, and
that the infant shepherd, Davy Centre,
who. comes from tending his flocks of
moonshine in the mountains of Ken-
tucky, may bounce his little rock off
the conck of our battered hero. Hon-
orable referee,tblow thy whistl. Let
the battle start."
And here, we awake, to see the
Crimson Jerseys of Harvard facing
the Orange and Yellow of Centre col-
lege, in the biggest football game in
the East today. The odds are even.
We, who are good sports, say, "let the'
best team win," but somehow it seems
that we're westerners, after all, and a
little western team is fighting a game
fight.

Dunne and Vick all oppose men who
are playing their first season of Big
Ten football. Dunne and Vick face
the hpavy men of the Illini in An-
derson and Vogel. Vogel is the 190
pound lineman who alternated with
Mohr at center against the Badgers.
For today's game Zuppke has an-
nounced that the passing job will be
done entirely by Vogel, who is one of
the best charging forwards the Illi-
nois coach has.
Hugh Wilson and Mohr should
have n interestingdtime at guard.
Both men are playing their, fourth
year of Conference football and while
neither has been an outstanding star,
both have played strong games
through their long string of gridiron
contests. Muirhead will meet a veteran
in Olander. The Indian tackle is sea-
soned from last year and has always
given a good account of himself.
Against Huffman, of. Ohio. State, Muir-
head displayed his Big Ten calibre. He
will have a less dangerous opponent
in Olander.
Carney Will Play
Goebel will be pitted against the
All-American Carney. "Watch Car-
ney" is the task Coach Yost has as-
signed Goebel. Both 'flankers are
tall, rangy, and fast. The Walquist to
Carney pass has in the past been the
most feared Illini threat. Carney's
play against Wisconsin . stopped all
bear stories that he was hobbling
around with one leg crippled and out
for the season. Instead Carney was
in evidence at all stages of the game.
Goebel is a great defensive end and
the contest between these two stars
may decide the game.
Walquist is a veteran of three sea-
sons but has never until this year
been assigned the pilot's position. He
will have the advantage of experience
over Uteritz, who will call signals in
Banks' absence. Both Uteritz and
Walquist are the lightest men on
their respective squads. Crangle has
the advantage of experience and
prestige over Roby but all who saw
the Wolverine fullback play last Sat-
urday are convinced that Crangle will
have a worthy rival. Crangle is chief-
ly noted for his work on the second-
ary defense although his bulk of 190
pounds makes him formidable as a
plunger. Steketee should surpass
Sternaman or Durant if he is in his
old time form. In kicking he should
have the better of the argument with
Durant. Last Saturday the Indian
kicker averaged 39 yards on his punts.
Several of them got away for over 60
yards. Kipke and Peden on the oth-
er halfback position are about even.
"Kip" is noted for his brilliancy in
an open field, while Peden is, a
speedy back.
