but due to the fact that observations
would be greatly delayed if natural
methods- were allowed, the plant is"
forced in the warm glass house and
later set ,out. in the open field, a pro-
cess that develops the plant in "one
year.
Careful Record System
The seeds are small, so small that
the ground in which they are planted
is previously steamed in order to kill
any wild seeds that might be there to
grow and confuse the records. The
seeds are counted, so that exact; de-
ductions from the reproduction can
be made. When the plants sprout.
they are placed in separate pots, and
each bears a label with- a number re-
ferring -to the records which tell of
the methods of cross-breeding and of
Sthe behavior in past generations. Af-
tei* reaching a certain stage they are
set out in the open field, and their
labels accompany them.
The work in keeping the records is
admittedly the most difficult, being
much more laborious and tiresome

than the transferring to Dots.or the
transplanting to the fields. And then,
imagine thirty thousand records!
It is science for science's sake. The
oenothera is far too commonplace to
be found in the ball-room of this or
the coming century, it has no food"
~value, it has no use that has yet been
discovered. But science has taken a
fancy to it, and raises it for the pur-
pose of science.
IfSSOURI WOMEN AVERAGE
$G ItONTH, SCHOOL EXPM~SE
From a recent survey of fifty-two,
girls at the University of Missouri, it
was found that the girls averaged
$310 a month for expenses. The
amounts ran from $35.00 to $116100 a
month. Only eight spent more than
$75.00, and four more than $100.00.
The report does not say whether
this amount covers board, room,
clothes, books, and the thousand and
one things which are considered es-
sential to university life.
