IRENCH PEOPLE STARING
SAYS WAR CORRESPONDENT
WOMAN JOURNALIST COMMENDS
CHILDREN'S FORTITUDE;
2'YEARS OVERSEAS
"You in America can hardly realize
that there are still people in Europe
who are starving." This was the
statement made by Miss F. F. Dodge
who attended the journalists' conven-
tion here.
"The French children," continued
Miss Dodge, "are starving, not dying
in the streets, but suffering he most
agonizing pains childhood cl know.
But they are not complaining, they
do not ask for whatthey can not get,
The French people do not do that;
but the need is there just the same."
Was War Correspondentr
Miss Dodge herself is under a phy-
sician's care aljpresent as a result of
two years of under-nourishment. As
a war correspondent Miss Dodge has;
been in France for nearly two years.
Her last trip was to attend the peace
conference as representative of La
Prensa and the Newark Ledger. At
present she is also writing feature
stories for the Sunday Philadelphia
Ledger.
Commends Daily
Diuring the course of the interview
Miss Dodge said of the University: "I
think students in Michigan hve a
wonderful opportunity for getting
the knowledge which will fit them
for practical work. The extremely
good work of the advertising depart-
ment of the Daily is proof of the prac-
tical work done in your department of
journalism."

ANNOUNCE TRY-OUT
RESULTS IN WEEK
Announcement of results of the try-
outs for Masques will have to be post-
poned until next week, owing to the
large number of candidates. Nearly
150 girls have applied for membership,
which fact has made it necessary for
the director to hold an almost daily
session in order that all the girls
may be given a fair chance. Finals,
in which those who have given evid-
ence of the greatest ability will appear
before the committee a second, time,
will be'held at 4 o'clock next Thurs-
day afternoon.
"It is certainly encouraging to find
so many of the University women in-
terested enough in getting dramatic
experience to go through this awful
ordeal of trying out," Professor Nelson
Masque director, said yesterday. "My
greatest regret is that of so many who
have shown real talent, We can choose
so few. But it seems best to maintain
our policy of a small organization in
which allof the members can be really
active. We shall be forced to select
only 30 out of nearly 150 who have
been tried out. The time is surely
coming when larger opportunities and
greater facilities for amateur dram-
atics must be provided .at Michigan,
he concluded.

The smart coat has a clever double belt and bias

The velvet skirts are very pretty this year, for
the ripple coat seems especially attractive when
