AT THE MAJESTIC

Anybody that saw Charlie Chaplin at
the Majestic and didn't laugh, probably
cried the day peace was declared. It's
a soldier film, "Shoulder Arms," a
burlesque on trench life. One produc-
er ,a long time ago discovered that
Charlie Chaplin had a gift for making
pathos humorous in a kindly human
sort of way, and "Shoulder Arms" has
a strong strain of that type of humor.
It keeps the picture from being offen-
sive or shocking to anyone, no matter
how sad may be his thoughts concern-
ing the war. It's a good, healthy pro-
jection of the fine, fun loving spirit of
the Yankee soldier. Pathos and Charlie
Chaplin may sound somewhat like a
combination of grape fruit and milk
punch-incongruous-but it is there.
Charlie brings the first laughs by
getting those feet of his tangled up
while trying, as a recruit, to pivot.
He reaches the trenches, crawls into
a dugout, and with great care affixes
a nutmeg grater to the wall so that
he may scratch his back and disturb
the cooties with the minimum of ef-
fort and the maximum of efficiency.
He camouflages himself as a tree, and
bewilders a German officer into
shooting and stabbing an entire for-
est. He-but space is limited and
it would only spoil the show, any-
Way, to try to describe all the an-
tics of this comedian par excellence.
The film attracted soldiers many
of whom had seen overseas service
and those with the actual trench ex-
perience enjoyed the fun more thant

Bill Hyde," featuring Will Rogers, and

the evening; at 7:00, 8:10 and 9:15.-
