GERMANY BUYS SUPPLIES
FOR DEIVERY AFTER WAR
Berlin Government Orders Interned
Merchant Ships to Load
Immediately.
Chicago, Dec. 7.-Germany has
bought and stored up more than $100,-
000,000 worth of copper, cotton, wool,
lard, wheat, farm products and ma-
chinery subject to delivery within 60
days after the close of the war, or "on
order."
Scores of German merchantmen
interned in Atlantic ports are wait-
ing to load these enormous purchases
into their holds. There is an unveri-
fed report that an order of small
tractor engines designed for farm
work has been delivered on shipboard
in Newport News.
Much secrecy has been used in ma-
king these purchases. Many supplies
have been bought "on margin" involv-
ing huge banking loans. Bankers
who have been watching the situa-
tion closely say that within a week's
time after the ocean has been opened
to them every interned Teuton vessel
will be racing to home ports loaded
to the bulwarks with goods necessary
for the re-habilitation of Germany.
