SECESSIONIST TENDENCIES.
Few persons are moved to cry, "Eu-
reka," when the student council is
mentioned. Its officers do not claim
that it is perfect, and the student body
does not enthuse in praising its all-
around excellence. But it is the only
really representative body of students
on the campus, and as such it deserves
respect. The action of the soph med-
ics in denying tentatively its juris-
diction over a class nomination seems
open to criticism.
Council members are chosen from all
departments, and in a manner approv-
ed by the .student representatives
themselves. Every class cannot seat
members in this organization, because
this would make the council unwieldy
in size. A re-apportionment of repre-
sentation was made last year, and it
was thought to be fair. The soph med-
ics evidently believe that it was not.
Instead of waiting for a possible com-
promise or settlement, they break
away and do as they please in a mat-
ter in which other classes submit to
the council.
If there is to be student self-govern-
ment, even in the present unsatisfac-
torily limited degree, there must be
unanimous and co-operative action on
the part of the classes. If one fails
to get its way, and goes off on a little
secession all its own, the whole idea
falls. And if thestudent council, as
in this case, lets such dissent go un-
penalized consistently, there are sure
to be breakers ahead for that body.
Some day campus beautification will
win out, and the campus will no long-
er resemble in appearance the back-
yard of a general contractor..
The house-club grading chart has a
remarkable effect in widening the size
of brow found on the average pledge.
Fall bids to honorary societies will
begin to go out soon to men who have
treated their class-mates respectfully.
It might be said that the presence of
worms in hot chestnuts is carrying the
spice of life a little too far.
The rise in the price of window glass
is attributed by some to the tortoise-
rimmed spectacle habit.
One requisite of a Sunday evening
speaker is that he have an unpro-
nounceable name. "
It takes a rainy day to tempt out last
year's styles in head-gear.

Mrs. Jordan entertains junior wom-
en from 4:00 to 6:00 o'clock this af-
ternoon. The junior play committee,
of which Martha Gray, '16, is chairman,
will meet unofficially at that time, and
the general features of this activity
will be explained.
Cross country walking for university
women will begin next Saturday, when
the first squad will leave Barbour gym-
nasium at 9:00 o'clock. All university
women are welcome.
Locker combinations in Barbour
gymnasium may be obained from Mrs.
Blackburn daily from 8:00 to 12:00
o'clock and 1:00 to 5:00 o'clock.
Wyvern meets at 7:30 o'clock to-
night at the home of Ruth Brown, 1012
Hill street.
An important meeting of Mortar
board will be held in Newberry hall
at 4:00 o'clock this afternoon.
