into second' place behind Wisconsin.
As he touched oft Ufer, Fox was in
fourth place, and. 18 yards behind the
leader, Ufer and 1-edges of Wisconsin
wvent way out in front., and were run-
ning- a seemingly separate'race when
Harvey took up the baton for Wiscon-
sin and Carroll for Michigan.
The Wolverine wizard ran the grand-
est race of his career. He raced away
at top speed, overtook Harvey before
the turn was rounded, and led all thq
way to the final home stretch. But the
stocky Badger veteran bad just the
reqluisite steam to p~ut into the final ag-
onizing sprint, which took him over
the finish line first. It was practically
the only close finish of the meet, and
the big crowd, "which had been attract-
ed to the Drake stadium by the ideal
weather and the prospect of classy
racing, cheered itself hoarse with
enthusiasm at the gritty ight of the
two runners.
Universities, colleges and high
schools took part in the twelve relays'
on the mneet program, and Referee Far-
rell, of Michigan, ran the events off in
record otime. Purdue won the two-mile
race in eight minutes 1 2-5 seconds,
wvith Northwestern the only contender,
and far in the rear. Chicago took the
one-mile event, only to be disqualified
by :Farrell for not carrying the baton.
And in disqualifying the Maroons, the
official administered to the Chicago
athletes a stinging rebuke for what
was termed a deliberate attempt to de-
ceive the judges, and take the race by
unfair means. With Chicago disquali-
fied the race went to .Missouri, which
finished second.
The unbeatable Chicago quartette
was victorious in the half-mile relay,
while Wisconsin took the four-mile..
