Editor, The Michigan Daily:-
In view of the general interest arous-
ed in Antarctic exploration by the lec-
ture of Sir Tnouglas Mawson, to be giv-
en at the Hill Auditorium ;next^ Fri-
day evening, Librarian Koch has ar-
ranged a special table in the'general
reading room near the entrance from
NOW the east corridor, where the principal
works descriptive of great Antarctic
exploring expeditions may be found.
The Antarctic Continent was disco-
ered independently and almost 'simul-
taneously by American and French ex-
peditions in 1840, though neither ex.-
pedition obtained a foot-hold upon the
continent, bound in as it is by icy bar-
d rier and enveloped for much of the
time in fog except in the neighborhood
of the land. The stretch of coast line,
over a thousand miles in length, which
was skirted by a squadron of Captain
Wilkes, was not again visited until
4 S. Main St. 1911, when Dr. Douglas Mawson in
the "Aurora" visited the region and
established bases at its two extremi-
ties. The account of this expedition,
E which owing to the unparalleled hur-
E ricanes (almost continuous there) was
on the white unwillingly extended to 1913, has just
eyes. nappeared in two beautifully illustrated
fect condition volumes under the title, "The Hom
of the Blizzard."
mber and Dark In the collection, exhibited are to be
found the similar reports, each in two
large volumes, of the first Scott expe-
Y CO.dition, "The Voyage of the 'Discov-
ery' "; of the Shackleton expedition,
4 "The Heart of the Antarctic"; and of
the second and disastrous Scott expe-
dition, "Scott's Last Expedition." The
reports of these three and the Mawson
expeditions are strikingly similar in
form, and are all beautifully illustrat-
i ed!' Ponting, the 'photographer of
/ .Scott's last expedition was a master in
his field, and it almost seemed ' as
though the last word had been said
in book illustration of this type. Yet
Poynting has said to Sir Douglas tat
he must yield the palm to Hurley, the
photographer of the Mawson expedi-
®= o tion. A part of Hurley's success is to
be ascribed to his intrepid character
and the way in which he has met the
-)hardships necessary to secure such'
pictures. He has now returned to the
Antarctic as a member of Sir Earnest
Shacklton's expedition which will at
' tempt to cross the Antarctic continent,
b and it is almost certain that he will be
a member of the Commander's sledging
party. A feature of "The Hoe of the
Riz La Croix 1 Blizzard" is found in' the beautiful
of smokers Qf Paget colored photographs which
em ssquality, bring out as nothing has done before it,
the beautiful colored effects, and par-
ticularly the blues and purples in the
polar landscapes. No one should fail
to inspect these beautiful illustrations
which transports one for the moment
0 into the home of the ice and the bliz-
Y) zard.
